Hey "Coloradians?" <just one more think I need to learn lol

Just got out of the Navy (submarines) and was accepted to Colorado State University for my masters degree. Should be moving early July.
Really excited for a change of scenery.

Any suggestions on living locations in the area?

I will look for some get-togethers and hopefully come hang with you guys!

You'll love it here. Hit up the Colorado BS thread, trip reports & Event thread (all stickied) and you'll get a good feel for meets (sometimes meats) and the folks around this area. Pretty sizable crew of mostly decent folks and pretty active trail run contingency as well. As for where to live, just don't live in Evans and you'll be fine. You're picking a rough time to come here as the real estate market has recovered and even gone back up again which means both houses for sale and rentals both have gone up in price which will make locating here a little bit more difficult as your buying dollar won't go quite as far as you'd like. This is one of the higher cost of living areas in the country due to how desirable it is to live here so you'll need to take all that into account. If you end up with any specific questions let us know and we'll try to help you out.

    Thanks for your service.

What kind of living? Own house, roommates? Near campus, don't care? "College neighborhood" or definitely not? Fort Collins isn't cheap on rent though there are deals to be had and obviously roommates can help.

If you find a listing online or something and want to know about where it is or what it looks like, I'm sure we can fill you in.

Oh, and you can drop the I - it's just Coloradoans. :)

I've lived in FtC for 25 years. I've lived in a few neighborhoods, and own three rental homes (so I have a basic understanding of the housing market). And I live about 6 blocks from campus.

Everyone here will tell you, FtC is a terrific place to live. I've lived all over the world, and this is the first place I never wanted to leave

PM me if you want more details on anything. Or ask questions here.

Awesome, thanks for the information everyone. Looks like I will be moving in July 5th, and probably putting my stuff in a storage unit while I take a few weeks and go on a nice vacation.

I will most likely leave my 2nd car (2006 Corolla) in the state. Anyone have recommendations on where I can store it safely? (I could pay one of you guys like $100 if you wouldn't mind watching it for about 3 weeks).

Yeah looking at the GI bill housing allowance and the rent in the area, I will be stretching everything pretty thin. I looked at different areas up to about 30 miles away, and the rent didn't change drastically enough to warrant moving farther away. Some of the apartments I am looking at are ~$1200-1300/mo. Good news is I am pretty sure I will bike to and from the university.

    Fellow Submariner!

My last boat was the USS los Angles, decommissioned it about 4 years ago in the Bremerton shipyard.

Also I live in Colorado near Pueblo Colorado. Any questions about the area, just give me a holler.

I rent 1,700s.f. houses (nice little houses) for about $1,600/month (but rent is going up this summer). I'd like to think you could get an apartment for $1,300. Your life will be so much easier if you get something within a mile or two from campus, and then bike in most days. Getting a place out of town, Loveland, Greeley(ugh) etc. would in my opinion but a big pain in the butt. FtC is a great town to bike around. From campus it is an easy bike ride (or bus ride) to "old town" where all the bars and night-life is. By night-life don't get excited, this isn't NYcity.

CSU is really working to grow the campus and student population. They are building apartments all over the area trying to keep up. Typical student rentals, there is a ton of turnover in the summer.

    Welcome to Colorado.

I was in a similar situation as yours when I left the military. You should see if CSU has a Student Veterans of America chapter to connect with other student veterans. If nothing else, you may be able to find a good roommate. I lived in a house as a renter and found some good older roommates which made expenses bearable. I wish you luck!
