i am taking a road trip down to sacramento from portland and was planning on going through redwood national forest down to eureka or so.

my question is do you guys prefer to take the 299 or the 36 back east towards i5?

i would like to be able to hang out/drive around redwood park (jedediah smith campground to be exact) and then cutback over to i5 and book it down to sacramento.

is either of those highways an easier drive? i dont really care if one is more scenic than the other since we will be getting our fill of the scenery in the redwood park.

google maps tells me to go via 299, but it looks like it could have more twists and turns than the 36.

    any suggestions?

Take the 299! I guess it's too late now. Did you? I just saw this. Just in case anyone else has the same question. 36 can be done, but it's more curvy, narrow, and takes much longer.

Screw that take the 20 and go through Clear Lake. You'll pop out in Williams on the 5 and much nicer drive than the 299.
