Someone tell me about tool boxes...

So, I've never really owned a truck. I've had a couple SUV's and 4wd toys, but never a truck.

I'm considering grabbing a tool box for the bed of my double cab.

Anyone have any major cons to the tool box?

Right now, I'm seeing it would shorten and already short bed by about 2'.

What else?

 

That is the reason I am not getting one....I don't want to give up the room of the bed.

 

I had a box in my last truck. The locking storage area was nice when I used it, but usually it was empty.

 

Depending on what you plan to do with the truck you could also do side boxes. I have them on my Tundra and they sit about 5" above the bed and only go over the wheel wells so the center of the bed is just fine. Lots of storage and also a great place for fishing rods and such. The ones I have came out of Texas. Was hard to find ones the right length as most are made for going behind a front cross bed box.

 

Tool boxes are really useful , short beds , well .....

 

A slim line box might be a good compromise for you OP

 

I had a tool box for many years on my truck. It's a great place to store things you wanna have but not keep in the cab, like recovery gear, shovel, straps, chain, maybe come along, even traction ramps may fit.

 

I have one of the Slimline Kobalt boxes from Lowe's. It only takes up 13", and has room under it to still put long items in the bed. I couldn't justifying putting a full size box in my short bed.

 

Exactly what he said. Perfect for all sorts of stuff. I always kept my chains, axe, a few tool, work.clothes, a quart or two of oil, antifreez. Shitty though when you need your entire bed. I'm looking into getting another one, this time an American made one. The last one was home depot special and tje latch started to f up over time. I had it for about 6 or so years. Also the weather stripping started to mess up too..

 

Mine ended up always collecting junk that I didn't need, so I'm going to try to go without it for a while and use the space behind my back seats instead. We'll see how it goes.

After extensive shopping bought a Lowes (Kobalt) slim line.... it is light weight almost to it's detriment......it is fairly inexpensive and best of all it has a life time gaurantee, none of the others could match the gaurantee. Have had it in my 13 access cab for almost 2 years, love it. Use it for mostly stuff I do not want loose in the cab.....umbrella, small socket set, 4 way lug wrench, frizbee, water bottles, dog stuff, qt. of oil, etc......the box is not contractors quality. For that go with a WeatherGaurd.
