My point is that many, not so able people like to take in things they no longer can. Many of the closures are more about limiting, not maintaining. Protecting a resource by virtually eliminating it is not a plan I would support.

You may have a point by saying the NP might be better off without me, but then again, you may not. :)

Birdman's picture sums up the cause I speak of!

I love all the recent pics and mini trip reports lately, every one of them. I'm still holding fast that I'll make it out in August. May have to settle for the Mojave or Yuha. We'll see.

Has anyone gone to DV in the summer or knows someone who has? I'm considering it but only after I decide on a route that would have me driving through the lower elevations at night. I want to find a place to camp and hike at in a higher elevation. Any constructive input would be appreciated...thanks

Best place to camp would be Mohagany Flat near Telescope Peak. It will still be warm up there. The views are incredible though.

I have. Traversed Saline Valley in August. Camped at Hunter mountain. :anonymous: I don't recommend it though. Too much risk with heat and remoteness.
^This. It's much safer at higher elevations, and good time to hike Telescope Peak, 11,043'.

It may still be very warm even at altitude. If the temps are up in the surrounding areas it is gonna be warm up there too. My first trip to DV was up in the Panamints in August. It was HOT!

:oldglory:Thanks for your input to all that responded. I do want to challenge myself by dealing with the elements but not at the risk of becoming a heat casualty and a statistic, then factor in a possible S&R or recovery and putting our first responders at risk just isn't worth it. I'm gonna have to occupy my time with something else in the meantime. Hunter Mountain is a place I really want to explore but it will have to wait. Hope you all are enjoying your weekend...

I'm not saying don't go just understand what the environment is like out there. I rarely go during summer. Fall, winter, and spring are the best times to go.
Maybe take a trip out there with a plan B in mind. Check out the daytime temps out at Panamint Springs Resort. You could arrive later in the day and enjoy an evening camping there (only $10). They have a good restaurant and showers. Next morning head up to Mohagany Flats and see what it is like. You could get lucky with some cooler temps. If not head down and out somewhere in the Inyos or White mountains.

Just waiting to see what the weather will bring.
So if we put together a DV meet, in the future, what would you be most interested in?
It would have to be broken into several different trips, no way to cover it all in one go.

    I figure a Swansea/ Cerra Gordo/saline (naked hot tubs)/eureka valley trip
    Titan/racetrack lipincott/Darwin
    a Panamint Valley trip
    and a Trona/Striped Butte/Death Valley trip

I am sure we could do more, but those are the main ones I can think of.

Fixed the one part for you.
A lot of those are close by one another and can be done together for a whirl wind trip. All depends on how much time you have each trip and where you start from.
Swansea/Cerro Gordo can be done in one day. Saline Can be one day or a whole week.
Panamint, Darwin, and Trona can be done in a day or a week as well.
Most of these areas can break down into multifaceted side trips.
