22° this morning! Had some elk stop by for an early breakfast around 3a.m. Could hear them ripping up the grass.

First official summer trip for 2015 is history. All in all a good trip. Little cold but, hey, I still have all 10 fingers and toes so I'm not complaining.

Spring trips aren't usually great for photos (too much glare from the snow) or animal sightings (too mangy with their winter coats) but this year was a little different. First off, there is no snow anywhere. Ok, maybe that's an exaggeration but there isn't as much as I'm used to seeing this time of year. Two years ago I remember walking the boardwalks at Norris Geyser Basin and the snow was still packed up to the tops of the handrails (3' or more) for most of the 2.5 mile walk. It can be a little trecherous because the snow sometimes melts from the bottom up since the heat from the ground is so intense in places. You learn to tread very carefully. Well, yesterday I did the whole loop and didn't have to even step in snow! And I did the Brink of Lower Falls hike on the north canyon road which usually doesn't open until late May because they just wait until the snow melts and its safe to let people down there. Did the whole hike, no snow. The snow drifts at the base of the falls were amazing though. I'll post those pics at some point, probably my favorite sight of this trip.
On to a couple other highlights of the trip...

I was in Midway Geyser Basin earlier today and noticed that Opal Pool was completely dry. Never seen it this way before so when I went to Old Faithful next I made a point to stop at the information desk and ask them what was up - I thought something was wrong! Well as it turns out Opal dries up after an eruption which only happens maybe once or twice a year. It must have gone off sometime during the night. And while I didn't get to witness it I thought it was pretty cool that I was the first one to report on evidence of an eruption!
    This was Opal today...kinda blah
    opalpano_zpsnnbw4yjy_68211c85545eddbb65d15fc32518cc5b6ddfefb4.jpg
and what Opal normally looks like (random pic of mine from 2012)
    _MG_4511_zps8tvksstj_43954b4c90e4136aa0dca223ff7e2a7c30794dcc.jpg

After that I headed up to Geyser Hill behind Old Faithful for my normal hike and investigation of the pools around the geysers when a couple of geyser-gazers (read: retired nerdy types who sit all day on the boardwalk recording stats on geyser eruptions for FUN) flagged me down and pointed out that Beehive Geyser's indicator vent (all geysers have little tell tale signs that they're about to erupt - nearby pools drain, noises increase, other pools become less active, etc) was signalling that an eruption was imminent. I continued on with my hike but at a slower pace as there's no telling exactly when Beehive will go even with the indicator. Well I was about 100 yards up the boardwalk when it went so I turned around and ran back towards Beehive. I think its eruptions are more impressive than Old Faithful - partly because you can stand within a few yards of it and FEEL the eruption happening. Amazing. It erupts maybe once a day in recent years but I've only seen it 3 times in my life. Once about a decade ago, last year in March when I was on the snowcoach tour, and today. Was definitely the highlight of today.
Thank you random geyser gazer dude for adding a little scale/perspective to my pic of Beehive
    _MG_9523_zpssg7afark_c52fdf2e6e5a877700dc2c58290f68a79edb7d30.jpg

So I learned to tell park officials about observations I've made - if something looks out of the ordinary there might be a good reason for it! And pay closer attention to what the geyser gazers tell you. Maybe I'll be one of them one day! :D

They should start banning people from the parks for being morons.

I concur. Can't believe what some folks do there
I actually suggested last year that they need to have mandatory 1st time visitor classes and teach people the basic do's and dont's of the park. The ranger I told that to agreed but of course there would be no way to fund such an program.

That would be a huge issue with the public as well. Imagine trying to plan a trip to Yellowstone when you live in California and they are saying you have to take a course that will likely be booked full through out the year. It would be a lot easier to just make an example out of a few by banning them and making it public. What would be even better is a building full of the animals that were shot due to them becoming to friendly with the public. Make it really cool looking. Bears, moose, buffalo, all professionally done up by a taxidermist. Then at the end dump some knowledge on why they died and depress people into not being dumb asses.
