Im an RN. Have been for 10 years, all spent working in ER, last 6 as charge nurse. Im working towards my BSN online, itll take me years but work pays tuition so that's nice.

So far this semester I've completed OB and Peds. OB was definitely NOT my thing. Being a male student I didn't feel like I was really wanted or welcome. The only thing that I would say helped my experience there was being bilingual. Pediatrics was pretty cool to see but I wasn't allowed to much with the kids; just observe and translate for a few families. I did get to see my first trauma in my peds rotation which I found very interesting. It was cool seeing how everybody in the room knew exactly what their role was and how they worked together as a team.
Currently in my medsurg rotation and I'm liking it so far...the instructor does a great job lecturing and that makes a huge difference.

I've been an ER nurse for 11 years. I like my job. Mostly the same old crap but something new every day. Anyone who tells you to work med-surg or whatever before moving to an ER...screw them and go for it if you can get hired.

Yeah I dabbled into EMS and got my EMT basic and spent a good bit of time on an ambulance.. No way I could work anything but ER or OR..

I like the excitement of EMS but RN is much better money and a more stable career than paramedic..

That's what I'm hoping for.. I hate school so I just have to suck it up for awhile and it'll be worth it.

Well worth it. I hated school too. I was horrible at it too but I plugged away. I ended up just doing my associate deg. RN. But I've been working towards my BSN in the last few years one class at a time. Everyone will need a BS in the near future

Yes. Finally! I graduated in May (with ADN) and took NCLEX in June (on my dad's birthday). I hung out with my kids while they were on summer break, so know that they're back in school I've started applying. I have an appointment tomorrow morning to get enrolled in a BSN program. From what I've read, a BSN is going to be required after 2020. If I don't take any breaks I can finish my BSN in 15 months. After that the plan is to enroll in a perioperative program (Surgical Tech of Operating Room Nurse) which is 1 year of school, work in the OR 2 years, get my CNOR certification, and finally go back to school for first assist.

Hi Guys- Found this, very cool. Started out as an Army Medic 91B, did that for a few years with straight leg infantry, grew up, got out, worked in the
civilian world as an OR Tech, then nursing school. Been an OR Nurse for over 15 years now and love every day. Work at a major medical center/trauma
center so it is very exciting. Lot of fun, staff is very cool and helpful. Love my truck, and like most of you it has got all kinds of first aid stuff.... gelfoam,
    dermabond, tape, etc etc...

Just graduated with my BSN in May. Went straight into the OR. Pretty awesome so far. Couldn't imagine working on the floor (I was a tech during school). I liked my preceptorship in ICU but like the regulars sched of OR.

Looking to figure out what the future holds. Possibly med school or Np. I would really prefer med school but we shall see.

Nice to see other Murses on here.

    Belated congrats on graduating.
I'm doing this for 35 years so here is some unsolicited advice:
Be excellent at what you do. Everyone is good, some are very good. The ones that understand why they do what they do become stars.
Look for the stars, there is a reason why they shine.

That's great man! I was blessed with the same scenario as a BSN new grad: OR right out of school in 1995. Worked for 8 years and excelled in Ortho. A couple local orthopedists offered to hire me, pay for grad school, full time salary as I completed reqs and clincals....12 years later I love my NP gig. I always tell students that I meet "OR is the place to be" :)
