Fat Bob's 5 lug 2."75" Lift Kit, Fat Bob's Performance 8000 Rear Shocks, 235/75/15 BFG A/T tires, UWS Low Profile Tool Box, AVID Off Road Sliders, Chrome Grille Assembly, Fog Lights, Black badges, Tinted Rear Window, TRD Bed Mat, TRD Off Road Floor Mats, Maglite Mount, CoverKing Seat Covers
Hope this helps anyone who's looking to up their stock 5 lugs for a better ride/height. Here is a photo comparing my (at the time) 5 lug with the Fat Bob's 5 lug kit on 235/75 stock steelies parked next to a prerunner with one of the TRD packages (this is from 3+ years ago and I don't remember if it was a Sport or OR):

You can tell by the side mirrors that mine still sits slightly below the stock prerunner trd height, but it's somewhat close.

Here's a front angle shot of how the tires fill up the wheel wells:

...and from the rear at an angle:

Unfortunately, I never took one straight from the side, but trust me: the rear wheel wells do not fill out well, aesthetically, with 235's on a lift. There's still a bunch of room up there.

One benefit of 235's, however, was that my mpg didn't drop and the overall ride was a night and day difference in nothing but positive ways. If you're going for that beefed up look over mpg though, 245's + hands down. Just my 2 cents.

What's the ideal rim width if I was going to put 30x9.5x15. Would it be 6" or 7"? I've read that if I keep the stock rim which are 5" they will not wear evenly.

Im dealing with that issue right now. I listened to everyone saying that they want bigger than 235s, so I bought 30x9.5r15. Once I got them, Tire Pros is telling me I shouldn't put them on my stock rims, because 30s call for a 6.5 inch rim minimum, where the stock 5 lug rim is 6 inches wide... Im probably going to return them and get 235s, because I can't justify spending a chunk of money on rims, that will probably need new tire pressure monitors to fit (TPMS is required to pass inspection where I live)...

Plus it doesn't make sense to put brand new tires on rims that wont make it ride like its designed to by the manufacturer.

Did they said what would be best, if 6.5" is the min then would a 7"- 8" be better?

They told me 7-7.5 inches would be ideal, but could also go up to 8.5 inches.

Just some thoughts, in reading this convo.

As far as the wheel size question goes, it morphed from stock tire size going to 235's.. and then the stock rim width at 15x6 issue came up.

The suggestion was to replace with 15x7, or greater width rims.

I would suggest that if you are at the point of replacing your rim sets - look higher than 15" .. you are going to be taking on the added expense of new rims anyway - may as well upsize for maximum upgradability potential.

I'm running 16x7's. They are good for up to 265/75R16's. I am currently running 225/75R16's. At 245/75R16's, they'll nicely fill out the wheel-well of the Tacoma - certainly better than 235/75R15's.

This is a Tacoma with 245/75R16's with a lift/level kit. User Scott572011 on this forum.

I put my 16" rims on, with 225/75R16's on them, onto my Tacoma, pre-lift. At that point, i was in a semi-emergency need for new tires, when the stock Dunflops were suddenly starting to fail badly. I knew that i didn't want to continue on with the stock steelies, and by happy accident found a set of like-new aftermarket rims/tires with lots of wear left for sale cheap, locally. 225's fit fine with no rubbing whatsoever on the stock suspension. Gearing did not suffer, with my manual transmission - i adapted, the vehicle didn't need to. In my case, the tire upsizing potential is still there with the rim size upgrade, for when this set of rubber wears out.. I can go either 235/85R16 or 245/75R16 on my next tire change, with no rubbing issues on a lift/level upgrade.

My point - in for a penny, in for a pound. If you are contemplating the replacement of the rims, look at the bigger picture .. keep your options open. - the greatest tool ever for mulling this over in your own mind, in terms of the many factors to be considered in rim/tire size changes.

Well said, brotha. I pulled the trigger when I bought my wheels and stuck with 15's and got 15x8's. Instead of getting 245/75/16
s or 265/75/16's, I'm gonna go with 31x10.5's, which in my opinion, are pretty much the same...kinda, haha

Doncha' jsut hate it when you want pictures of what the skinny profile of the tire loons like, pictures taken from low in the front or back, and all the pictures you get are from the side?
