Correct. Spend some time with the tire calculator and looking at manufacturer specs and 0.5" of difference in the diameter calculated from the metric or floatation size and the actual manufacturer specification is very common. Not necessarily always less either, can go either way - some tires are bigger rather than smaller.

That would be very common yes once under load. As anyone who has jacked up their vehicle knows tires deflect significantly under load. Another variable is rim width, the specifications are for a specific rim width but of course tires can be installed over a range of rim widths. Mounting on a different rim width changes the tire section width and height, changes of 0.25" fairly typical.

And again, except for deflection under load the variations can go in either direction. So a 35" floatation tire might have a spec'd diameter of 35.5 and when mounted on a different rim width be 35.8 in diameter. Over inflated it might only deflect 0.8" and end up exactly at 35" under load.

In other news 2x4s are not 2 inches thick and an 8 inch foam mattress is less than 8 inches thick when you are laying on it :)

A bit confused . What is the difference between the C D & E rating ? What is the standard all around rating ?

mach1man001 gave you a good link, but to head off any misunderstanding I'll point out a few things.

For LT tires all the "load rating" means is what is the maximum pressure the tire can be inflated to. It does not by itself rate the tire for any particular load. These C,D,E and so forth ratings are also equivalently specified by a "ply rating" (C=6, D=8, E=10) but this "ply rating" has absolutely nothing to do with the physical number of plies in the tire construction - it is just a hold over from long ago before radial tires were used.

The higher the "load rating" and thus tire inflation pressure allowed typically the stronger the construction and that also means typically the higher the weight of the tire (strong things tend to weigh more after all).

As to how much load a tire can actually hold - that is a function of both the tire size (e.g. LT235/85R16 vs LT255/85R16) and its inflation pressure. Typically a larger tire can handle a larger load at the same inflation pressure as a smaller tire.

Key point - regardless of the "load rating" identically sized LT tires at the same inflation pressure are rated to the same load. So at say 45 PSI load C, load D and load E rated tires all are rated for the exact same load. The way a load E tire can handle more load is that you can safely inflate it to higher pressures than lower rated tires.

Because higher load rated tires have to handle higher inflation pressures their construction is often more robust and so they might be more durable off road than lower rated tires. And as mentioned before that also means they might be more heavy. But all of these are secondary consequences - there is nothing in any specification that would make a load E tire stronger than a load C tire or a load E more heavy either. It is just typically they probably are as a simple consequence of a load E being designed to handle higher inflation pressures and loads.

One key point - most off road tires would be run under inflated when off road (say 15 psi instead of 45 psi for a LT tire). This lower inflation greatly reduces the susceptibility to punctures in the tread region but increases the susceptibility to punctures in the sidewall. A well designed off road tire will have a sidewall designed to run underinflated off road and resist sidewall punctures while a highway tire designed solely for high loads won't necessarily. So again "load E" on its own really doesn't tell you anything about the appropriateness for a tire off road. It just so happens by the time you armor up the sidewalls of a tire for good off road performance it may have become capable of handling load E pressures in the process.

This is the BF Goodrich response to my email on 04/20/2015. We appreciate your request for the BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 tires in size 265/70R16 load range D. Unfortunately, we will not be manufacturing this tire with a "D" load range. However, your request will be forwarded to the appropriate Marketing Group for future consideration.

What load range is everyone buying this tire in. I usually get load range E due to the plys. But due to the info above maybe I could go lower.
