Greetings, i am new here and as such i am asked to do an initial post.

Today i broke the cardinal rule set forth by my father and his father and his father. That of course is to NEVER ever buy a new vehicle. I did this because buying a used truck is different then buy a used car. Buying a used tacoma is different then buying a used truck. I did my research, waited for new used tacomas to hit my local dealerships. I struggled with my decision over and over. Knowing buying new is a terrible idea often told the following: "You will just be pissing money way", and "Worst investment ever". But the used inventory sported by my local dealerships was always 10% to 5% less money then new. So i bought new!!!

I bought new because now i can ensure my truck sticks to a religious maintenance cycle.
I bought new because anyone that tells you vehicles are an investment is an idiot or dealing with low end cars at the end of their depreciation cycle.
I bought new because the price different between what i wanted (new) and what was there (used) was small.
I bought new because it is a F***ing tacoma and i wanted it!

With Tacomas, this seems to make sense. Other brands don't hold value like our trucks.

only truck/car I ever bought new was this truck and a 2005 STI. It does make sense for some cars/trucks under certain circumstances

I recently bought a new Tacoma for the same reasons. I went through the same logic, over and over. I never planned on buying a new car when I started searching, but it just made sense.

Sounds like you got part of the concept of your family, but maybe not all? Or at least you didn't express all...........

There is nothing inherently wrong with buying new, if

    1) you pay cash. Even 0% financing isn't, because you don't get the best price on the vehicle you could have w/o it.

    2) you intend to keep the vehicle at least the vast majority of it's service life, or at least until it hits bottom on the depreciation curve. Yes, you take the initial depreciation hit, but it winds up amortized over 15-20 years, so it's not too big a deal. Most people barely get out of the finance cycle before jumping in again, so few of us ever make this concept. I'm 12 years and 101k into my last new purchase. While it still fills the bill, I admit I get itchy every once in a while about something different...........

    3) nothing else in your financial life is negatively impacted because of your purchase. Unpaid credit cards, need now to take student loans, etc etc. IE things that would have been a more financially beneficial use of the $.

That said, few can clearly state they meet all 3 of these. And sometimes, even those of us that could, still choose used, IF we can find what we want, as you indicate, at a fair price. I bought my '13 @ 2 years old with under 9k miles, dealer 'serviced'. I agree I didn't save a ton of money over the same choice new, but I did save enough to fund my mods of choice and take a cruise.

Your 4 reasons are interesting; to me they rank kinda like this

#2 I bought new because now i can ensure my truck sticks to a religious maintenance cycle.

Sounds good, but buying from 'guys like you' gets you the same thing. Be sure you actually do it!

#3 I bought new because anyone that tells you vehicles are an investment is an idiot or dealing with low end cars at the end of their depreciation cycle.

Agree the term 'investment' is usually improper in relation to a depreciating asset. But not always. So maybe a little harsh with the idiot? And dealing with low end (or high end) cars at the end of their depreciation cycle still isn't an 'investment', unless you are a skilled flipper, then it can be.

#1 I bought new because the price different between what i wanted (new) and what was there (used) was small.

    Best reason.

#4 I bought new because it is a F***ing tacoma and i wanted it!

Worst reason. Sounds like an adult version of the terrible twos. Pouty little kid stomping his feet in defiance?

Truly hope you enjoy your truck and all things around it work out just great for you. I like your selection of a white AC!

My #4 is a joke meant to end the post on an energetic note. I would have loved to find a used version of my truck with a price that reflects that used status but summer is here and i am in need of the utility a truck gives. I have been renting trucks from Home depot just to get lumber home.

I intend to keep the vehicle for at least 300k. I don't like jumping from car to car and typically own my cars for 80% of their life.

This purchase does not negatively effect of financial situation, i had positive equity in my trade and i am offsetting the monthly payments with newly acquired income we were not expecting. (so our monthly net flow is the same)

while my wife would not let me pay it in full i put a substantial amount down, and i have good credit so my ARP is quite low. Not 0% but low enough to allow me to sleep at night.

thanks all of the welcoming comments.

Haha, the only brand new vehicles I have bought were an '04 STI and my '14 Tacoma. Well played sir. :)

I bought the STI because there weren't any used ones at the time.. (First model year of the US STI) The Tacoma I bought new for the same reason as the OP. I had an '09 Access cab and wanted a double cab. Used 12+ Double Cab Off Roads weren't far enough away in price for me to skip out on a new one.

Someone has to buy new, or there wouldn't be any used. Duh.

LOL, for sure. Somebody bought those Pontiac Azteks new. All normal cars lose value but some, especially Tacoma's, lose less. Special cars like Ford GT's have appreciated in value since 05' and 06' but nobody here can afford those so there's no point to even mention them.

Glad to see all the reasonable, though filled analytics. I bought new because I'm 40 and at the beginning of the curve of my own depreciation cycle and sometimes you just gotta do what makes you happy! Keep having fun!:)

It definitely makes sense to buy new Tacoma's. Damn 2007 Tacoma's with over 100k are still being sold for over $20k.

Most folks shopping 300k vehicles aren't all that fussy on color. They care more if it runs and stops well.......... ;)

    Still a great choice IMHO!

Personally, I'm totally behind reason #4. I'm a grown up, I have a good job, all my family's needs are met. I got no hookers or blow. I don't even have cable TV. Just a bunch of rascals who like to go camping. The unbelievably high resale value helped my logical side agree, but keepin' it real, I'm kind of a snob, and I don't want someone else's boogers in my car. Wanted a new truck, bought a new truck. Conscience is clear.

Plus my wife totally enabled me, because she's cool like that. We're such a disappointment to Dave Ramsey.

Way to go, OP. Just ENJOY it!

I like to say that I have more time than money. I have always bought used. A better term is in properly bought by the other guy. I have been wanting a Tacoma for a long time. The last time I looked for one I ended up with a Nissan frontier not because I wanted one because it was a smart choice. The same year Tacoma's where $23000 the Nissan's $19000 the Frontier I bought was 18400 but I I only paid 14800. Their internet advertisement had flipped the numbers. It took six hours to drive home in it but I did. They called it a mistake I called it bait and switch. I drove that Nissan for two and a half years and sold it for $14300. $500 loss in 2 1/2 years on a vehicle. I then bought Toyota matrix for $13500 it was only 7 months old with 6800 miles on it. The original owner endedup nott liking it. She paid $18700 for it 7 months earlier. I just bought my 07 81000 milesTacoma from a private party with all the maintenance done at the dealer for $16000. It took 4 months to find the wright truck at the wright price. I have been looking for a Tacoma for my son. His first car/truck for 7 months to find the wright truck and price. We will be picking it up on Sunday 2003 extended cab 4 banger TRD Tacoma for $6200 143000 miles. The used good deals are out there you just have to be patient.

    But

You are groan man and I want it right now!!! Well that works to.

    Enjoy your new Taco. :mudding:

Id like to be proven wrong but highly doubt it. An old co workers dad has 3 Ford GTs : stock, 800rwhp+ one, and a GT-X1 (look up Top Gear Jeremy driving one) and some other junk like a Ferrari F40, etc. He's probably on the 6 speed online forum BSing around and planning a cars and coffee get together. I feel sorry for the guy, not knowing which of 15+ badass cars to drive every day would be a tough job. Guys son told me that he hires a guard to watch his F40 being serviced at the dealer. They have it there for days sometimes and private guards are there 24/7 until it's done. LOL.
