Lol... Looks like I thought it would. Get you're hands on a "good" one. Don't build a shitty one. You'll know where your money went when you buy one from a company that has done the R&D. Not some backyard hack.

    Resurrecting this because relevant.

I have the OEM roof rack and am looking to add a "rack" on top to secure cargo, since the crossbars are useless for this. Not really looking for a basket, but instead a platform with rows of crossbars to be able to use as tie downs, something like this:

    http://www.walmart.com/ip/Slim-Low-...et000&beacon_version=1.0.1&findingMethod=p13n

Anyone have a set-up like this? And before I get all the one word Prinsu, FrontRunner, etc. responses that are no help, I'm not interested. This will NOT be used to haul heavy items or for RTT so does not need to be super robust. I have a truck bed to haul heavy shit.

Don't know why it wouldn't work. My suggestion (as you mentioned) is to not put a lot of weight up there. IIRC they are rated at around 100lbs but I would never consider putting that much weight up there. I had one that came standard on my 2011

I have seen some cool racks made from the aluminum ramps you would use to load your ATV in the back of the pickup. If you want just a platform, you get get some of those cut them in half and bolt them together for a nice aluminum platform. Even better if you can find a used pair on the classifieds. check out expeditionportal for some more info and those racks.

@zscott Thank you for the useful info. Your racks are very VERY nice and I'd love to own one, unfortunately I cannot currently justify the cost. Maybe sometime next spring...?

You know, now that I think of it, this may not work great since the OEM crossbars are curved and not straight... Might look kinda janky.

It would be great to be able to use two skinnier ramps - they could double as recovery boards.
