Man, this vinyl flooring/insulation project is kicking my tail. Probably taking twice as long as I anticipated ...

I used Peal & Seal on the bare metal. Then layered MLV over that, then a vinyl carpet kit:

No matter what I do—stretching, heat gun—I can get the big ripples out of the hump in the middle in the cab. I need to use the truck this week, so I've said F-it and installed the side panels, seats, etc.

Any suggestions on smoothing the vinyl out after it's installed?

It's sort of like hard plastic, that gets softer when it warms up. If you've ever been in the back of police cruiser, it's the same material they use—so you can hose out the interior off all those nasty bodily fluids ... I don't know if moisture like a steamer would do it, or get hot enough ...

With this new forum layout, I thought for a second your sig was really your comment on my post: "beauty is in the eye of the beholder, in this case the beholder is likely blind."

I was going to agree with you!

Right. That's why I went with vinyl. My golden's shedding ruined the carpet. I'm also not putting the jump seats back in, which really opens the space up ... But still, I guess I'm a perfectionist and want it as polished as possible ...

One of those things that maybe doesn't look like it fits all that well initially and a month later looks perfect, perhaps?

I was thinking that. Maybe the hot summer sun will heat it into place?

Think maybe James is onto something. Let the summer sun bed that thing into place.

Seems like anything molded to a certain shape needs a combo of heat and time to really relax the material. Just a guess, of course, but I'd try letting it sit for a few weeks and then take a look and see if it's settling into place.

Looks okay. I figure once you have the seats and console in you wont be able to see the ripples. The temperature swings in the truck will probably relax it into place a bit too.

I covered under the driver's seat with peal'n seal and stoped. I'm wondering if it's not gonna smell like following a roofing truck in the summer.

Sorry for the delay ... I'm a little concerned about the smell, too, but so far so good. The stuff stinks coming out of the box, but my whole cab is now Peal & Sealed, and has baked in some pretty high temps, and so far so good. The worse smell is the rattle can bed-liner spray I used on some of the trim. That's stuck around for at least a week now.

And the front came out pretty good. I'm not done yet. I have to still fit some of the trim, but I'm happy with it.

Thanks, had to put my floor back together for work but I'd like to check back with you around August and see things are.
I won't have any time for it before.
    Thanks in advance.

I keep making this mistake, sorry.
Answered on the post just before this one.

Have you tried a legit heat gun?

Yeah. The heat made it stretch pretty good, then it contracted a bit tighter then how it started, but I think those ripples are too large for the heat gun to really help.

It was about 100 degrees in the cab this afternoon, after parking at work in the sun. No asphalt smell.

Wouldnt use a heat gun. If you stretch the material while it's hot and pliable you'll just end up loosening it and making it worse.
