I noticed that, when I lift my hood, the right (driver's side) has a lot more black gunk collected than the left, which has almost none.

Is this an indicator of something irregular or is the engine just designed so that it collects more gunk on that side?

the gunk is not mud/dirt-like. it is black, engine settled gunk. all the fluids are decently full.

I had a slow leak from my power steering pump shaft seal. it was leaking out onto the pulley and flinging it up onto the hood. it was a very slow seep but it looked like what you are describing on the hood. take a look at your power steering pulley and see if it has the same "black gunk" that is on the hood. if it does, you need to replace or rebuild your PS pump.

Edit: Just realized 2nd Gen. :anonymous:
Though according to the diagram above, it could be your PS pump as well.
