I'm new to the forum and couldn't find an existing post with this issue. I have developed a loud tapping noise but I only hear it on the highway once I get above 50 mph. The frequency doesn't change as I go faster and it is not rpm dependent. I've driven down the highway doing 60 mph and put it in neutral and the noise doesn't change. I can even rev the engine and it doesn't affect the noise. But once I get down to 40 or 45 mph it disappears. I'm only hearing it with the window down but even with the radio on. But I can only hear it from the drivers side. If I roll up all the windows and just roll down the passenger side window, I don't hear it. I've checked all the heat shields and they are tight. There isn't anything in my tires. I lubricated the u-joints a couple thousand miles ago. I have 36,700 miles on this truck. Had anyone else had a similar noise and found a solution?

I'd say it's your body trim doing that. Check everything .. roof rubber, fender fairings, mud flaps, grill trim, bumper covers... etc.

I've gone through most of the body panels. Toyota did a horrible job of mounting the plastic body panels. There is very little structural integrity to how they are mounted. A clip here, a bolt there, but yet half of it is still unsupported. That being said, the rear inner fender linings both rattle a lot. But I tightened everything and I they still rattle a lot. I think that may be where the noise is coming from. The problem is, without modification, I see no way to keep them tight. They could use a few more clips or bolts holding them.

I'm not sure what it's called but check your inner fenders. Those "splash guard curtains" can come loose and flap against the inner fender at speed

The inner fender pieces were loose. I was able to wire tie them but the tapping is still there.I've bought some strong 2 sided tape.I'm just going to start taping things down until I can figure it out. I had it at a shop and they couldn't find anything.
