Posted this in Geek Thread but didn't get a response, anyone have some input?

Does anyone have a recommendation for a router/modem combo they would suggest?
We've got a 6 bedroom house with one of the rooms in a separate building about 15 yards behind the main house. trying to get something that offers coverage to the whole house.

Right now I have a Netgear: WNDR3400v3 and it barely gets coverage to both ends of the house but can't sustain a connection to the blu ray or chrome cast (I believe it's just a b/g/n router, not AC). I would like to get something that just bathes the entire property in coverage for $200 or less (preferably). Any suggestions?

Sorry been busy. Saw your post, haven't got around to answering.

Lots to go over depending on your house setup. If you want you can try out one of my Asus RT-N66U and see if it works better for you I got extra routers hanging out. I get really good distance on these routers and they are under $200 new all day long.

If you want to spend more the RT-AC68U is 200$ and really good. I have 2 of these in my house and 2 of the RT-N66U's running together and I really have had good experiences with them.

Most people don't have devices that support wireless N so you may not need that technology yet.

As long as its dual band but you may need to look into a signal booster to get to the back of the house.

Mine took a $hi+, so I went with a Netgear AC1900 Nighthawk (simply because its what Target had and I needed it ASAP). Seems to work pretty good compared to the old one.

I can reach the stop light by my house, which is 3 houses down, around the corner, and though 4 brick walls. The router I'm connecting to sits in my computer room on a shelf. If you tweak the Asus right, they go far.

Right, but how many people in here are you and even want to fuck with that? Are you physically messing with it by adding foil antennas or moving it up high in a central area? Or are you changing firmware?

It's been a standard for 5 years now, and there were draft devices out before that. I don't have any devices that DON'T support 802.11n. Now if you said 802.11ac I'd agree...

Stock firmware. I just make sure I'm not sharing any channels with any neighbors and make some minor other adjustments. Takes about 30 minutes to figure it all out on any router. All you need is WiFi Analyzer (free app) to see what your neighbors are using channel wise. Then adjust as needed.

Ment to say AC not N. I have AC routers, only have 3 things that support it so far. Good catch!

Seconded on the ASUS routers for a budget setup though. They really shine with some custom firmware like Tomato. If you want real coverage, get a UBNT EdgeRouter and a couple of their APs.
