I came across this in a box under the deck. It fits my truck. But it's in this kind of condition. Where would I begin? How 524ecbfcfc310f97e644f2df4c80a511_8e57d1bbdf6d430be098870d106ae7676eaf9e89.jpgwould you go about salvaging this beautiful ARB product?

What a shame. Wonder how the internals held up with the factory assembly lube. Bearing surfaces can be cleaned up along with ring gear contact area. Heck if you get it all cleaned up you can replace any parts that cant be saved for cheap.

IIRC Thu is the 3 pc design that was replaced by the newer 3 pc design. You could easily bring that back to life. The only issue if it does have problems, ARB no longer supports it. I can confidently say, I would prefer this in an 8.4 more than a Toyota/Eaton e-locker. :) good luck

JiveyDude- many thanks for the suggestion. It polished up nicely. Now, to have someone who knows what they're doing install it! Federal Way, here I come. 5047e614b42adf8a458cf36c5d311024_b6eb297706b9b811adf6806a5d18f7258b46aaea.jpg

Yeah. I have to decide which compressor. And don't need to have it torn down and have the gaskets replaced so they remain operating and stay flexible at -45 below zero. Australians think of a lot of things, but they don't design their gaskets for THAT.

does anyone have any great suggestions for compressors? Products that they think are good as well as products to stay away from?

This should be in the WTF thread. Who finds an ARB locker under their deck? Then who finds an ARB locker under their deck that actually fits your truck?! Crazy.

How did you clean it so well. I wish i had a deck now, though I'd prefer a supercharger!

JiveyDude suggested removing the rust using YouTube electrolysis, and that's exactly what I did!

It worked like a charm. Let the electrolysis run for about five hours. Now, to install the thing in my 8.4 rear end. Unless people steer me clear, I'll use an ARB compressor. I just need to customise all O-rings to withstand -50F. And they're notorious for leaking! :(

I just called a garage here in Denver where they actually have places that can install it, and they're quoting me five hours to install the compressor and five hours to install the rear locker for a total of 10 hours. They want to charge me $125 per hour for the compressor install, and $175 per hour for the locker install. Does that seem high medium or just about right to you?

Nope, nothing under my deck either but this name badge "James R. Hoffa IBT Pres...t" something like that...

Denver?!?!? I thought Denver is a far drive from Friday Harbor, WA!

Compressor install @ $125/hr had better be plug/play with wiring and switch and running the blue ARB line back to the rear axle.
Locker install @ 175/hr seems rich. Granted dropping the rear axle, remove 3rd member and drill the diff housing and put it all back together and then test it = 5 hours seems optimistic.

May want to budget for things they find while taking the rear end apart (leafs, 5100/5125, bushings, diff breather....)

I would ask over at Colorado4x4.org or at least in the Colorado BS thread (in the regional forum)... I'd say 800-1000 for a diff r&r seems fair since they have to set up the gears again... it seems odd that they didn't include the cost of a new ring and pinon in there, I thought re-using gears was frowned upon.

I went outside to look under my deck for my ARB, turns out I don't have a deck OR an ARB. Bummer!

Five hours to install a compressor? That's ridiculous. If you can drill 4 holes and run some wiring through one of the existing holes in your firewall, you can install an ARB compressor in about an hour. Likewise, if you're at all mechanically inclined, pop the rear 3rd member off yourself and take it to their shop, and only pay them to do the locker install. That should only take them 2-3 hours.

Hell, if you're still in WA, I'll help you do the compressor and run the airline in my shop. Please don't pay some assclown $600 to bolt a compressor to your truck.
