The width of that handrail does not look ADA compliant. If you have a moment, can you please explain why you hate America?

    That's not a handrail , it's 1/2 of the wall cap

 very interested to see your design on these. I imagine a walnut (I think that is what you are using) inlay either around the circumference of the top/cap, or running vertically up the post to echo the inlay on the non-ADA-compliant wall cap.

The posts are going to be VG Fir , with a small shaker style panel , I am considering doing the panel in black walnut but might just do some square inlays into the newel post in black walnut

I'm laying out the 2 newels so that the handrails land on a flat , non paneled section of the post and that is complicated by how the curved stair railing and the square stair railing meet at the landing as far as elevations

The result is that I can't really do a tall panel , so I'm laying out a story board and going to mock something up to look at today as well as lam up the second half of the wall cap when my assistant gets home from her job for lunch haha

With everything else you've done, it's hard for me to imagine panels in your vision. The idea of square inlays makes sense for your modern craftsman theme, maybe like 3 squares grouped vertically at the bottom front (or three of four sides) to give visual weight/foundation to the bottom of the post. And then a laminated horizontal walnut inlay around the cap offset in the same proportion as the one in the wall cap, it that makes sense.

Or just a big fucking raw fir log. With a wooden sculpture of a plate of poutine for the cap.

    I'm an idea man.

That's cool but I still would have the same problem with the panels or flutes or whatever being limited in location and size due to where the handrail elevations intersect the newel at the mid stair landing / direction turn

All my cabinetry is Fir Shaker so I'm trying to pick up some visual clues from what is already in the room but I guess I'll know after I mock something up

The newel boxes are about 7 1/2" square

Nevermind the basketweave background , but I was thinking about 4 squares arranged similar to this on the face , probably 1" x 1" squares or so

    Ah.

So I take this as a "no" on the poutine carving.

Is this visible from the front door? AKA, first impression jewelery? Might consider a narrow walnut 1/4 or so vertical inlay bisecting the square grid and rising toward the top to echo the wall cap inlay. I know that would be outrageous and over the top for a Shaker, and it may muddy up the simple elegance, but maybe worth sketching or mocking up.

Or even try these four at the bottom, then start the vertical hairline just above them, and end it just below two more squares at the top. Kind of like a Stickley inlay.
