OK lets have some fun with this. Tell me why or why not the 2016 Tacoma is the Gen 3. No hard feelings here. We all have our opinions and I want to hear them. This way we won,t pollute other threads. Have at it.

It's a 3rd gen. Has enough improvements to separate from the the 2nd gen....even if there are some carry over parts.

Just look a the F-Series through the years as an example. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_F-Series

    Too few to list.
My opinion is with the new drivetrain and facelift, etc, its enough to qualify as the 3rd gen. It doesn't have to be 100% new. My 2015 6th gen Mustang is the new mustang and it still shares more than a few things with the 5th gen including engine and tranny.

New drivetrain, facelift, new interior features. I don't really understand how it could not be considered a new generation

Some of the reason I think this is the Gen 3 Tacoma is first off Toyota considers this the next generation of the Tacoma and has said so publicly. They have also mentioned the previous generation Tacoma which gives even more proof that Toyota considers this the next gen Tacoma.
I think this generation of Tacoma has more than enough new features to make it a legit Gen 3 vehicle. New motor, new trans available to Tacoma, new look to front end and even a change to the rear with the spoiler and Tacoma stamped into tailgate. New dash, crawl control on the off-road just to mention some.

Should Mike Sweers said this Tacoma was all new except for a seat buckle or whatever he said? Well No probably not. Next generation definition of a vehicle never meant 100% changed. Hell if the previous generation had a lot of good points one might argue it wouldn,t be too smart to have a 100% change. I will start with this and add more if I have to.

I guess people are quick to say that it is a carry over from Gen 2 in comparison to the complete change from Gen 1 to Gen 2.

Good point but that was like going from a compact to a mid sized truck. My guess is from here on out the Tacoma will be a mid sized truck.

What % of totally different parts are needed to convince the doubters that this should be a 3rd gen TACOMA.
    I've had 2 1st gens. and am on my 3rd 2nd gen.
The 2nd gen. got it right and is a perfect fit in Toyota's Truck line up.
The new engine and trans. along with a restyled interior along with some bed/tailgate and other changes/improvements make it
    a 3rd gen. to me.
I bought a 2015 because the SnugTop shell I want will not be available for a few years if past history stays true or I would have waited for the 2016.

I think its a 2 1/3 gen. Recycling the cab, dumping a 3.5L Rav4 reject motor in, gaining a gear onto the trans, making it butt ugly with Mitsubishi Raider tails, and adding a go pro mount doesn't make it a new gen. Maybe the 3rd gen will come out around 2024.

    Let's see...
The first Gen got a 'face-lift' in 2001 with the vertical slat 'Jeep' grille, and a four door cab choice... but still a 1st gen. I think the 3.4 engine was the same as 2000.
The second Gen was a TOTAL change, the mini truck became a mid-size truck, the grille no longer looks like a Jeep, and the engine grew to 4.0.
The 2016 should be a 3rd Gen, even though the body/ cab is the same because of the engine change to a 3.5... as that seems to be the common denominator for Tacoma generations. So, it isn't because of the face-lift, but more because of the motor.
