Had a rather unfortunite incident over the long weekend and ended up sinking my tacoma. Yes water made its way into my intake. Plugs were pulled trail side to clear any water that could of collected in the cylinders dried everything out as well as i could. Once limped home manifold was all removed cleaned plugs changed air filter and oil changed. With all this done i have noticed it ticks a fair bit more than usual. Before hand i recall a slight tick just above typical injector clack. Ill be getting a video tomorrow. Narrowed down to the right rear corner of the engine (side that really sunk) wonder if anyone has made the same mistake or a few things that could cause this.

Ouch...I've read some stories here where some have sunk it, and re-vived it...good luck, OP.

More i look into it just sounds like normal valvetrain noise. Bit like a diesel have found multiple videos like it. Could of been there before and now that im looking for issues it just stands out like a sore thumb. Still revs free seems to run fine overall just seems loud now.

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=F2jYJfxjj8c

Very similiar to this. Kind of feels a tad under powered than i remember as well.

Sounds like your near drowning is messing with your head. Sounds like the normal noisy 4.0 engine to me.

Crap can ruin your rings if to much water got injested with dirt in it. If it runs ok and doesn't blow white smoke out the tail pipe, you probably ok. No electrical problems?
Sunk mine and got the bottom of the passenger seat wet and f'ed some sensors. Lights all over in dash now. Still runs great.

change oil MULTIPLE times within the next 100 miles.... you wanna get any contaminants out. Took a good 4-5 oil changes on a jet ski that got sunk for 5 minutes to get all the water out of the crank case.

Sounds perfectly normal to me. Like every other 4.0 I hear...They all tick but they sure do last a long time..

+1 on this, although I wouldn't be quite that extreme. Maybe Seafoam it.

    Sounds like a Cummins diesel.

Agree with post 11 & 13. Seafoam the intake and crankcase oil. Change oil and filter then drive it.
    Probably last 300 k miles.

if it injested a good amount of water and sat in water its going to take MULTIPLE oil changes to get the water out. Good luck op. Spend 100 bucks on cheap oil and do back to back oil n filter changes after a full heat cycle... and keep changing it untill the oil doesnt come out milky.

Oil never came out milky the first time round. The entire engine bay was not under water just the intake corner was maybe submerged for 5 minutes tops. I dont think it took it ALOT of water but a good bit made its way into the intake, enough for the filter to be soaked.

So far tomorrows game plan will be another oil change sea foam everything and check for any vac lines that could be plugged yet. Its ran for the week after my initial clean out and i have 0 condensation inside the fill cap where as when i worked at toyota pretty much everyone was filled with water build up.

Pretty torn as to whats what with it right now most of the sound is right from what i have seen its just that diesel sound while reving is what has me stumped.

Engine under water will not hurt any thing unless it was running and drew water into a cylinder [water will not compress] if this happens the damage will be instant and catastrophic. [bent / Brocken rod or piston caused by hydrostatic lock. A small amount of water will not harm the engine. You state you pulled the plugs and cleared the cylinders so change the oil and filter and drive it any remaining moisture will boil away with engine heat. Not a big deal.

A little off topic, but have you checked your other fluids for contamination?

Compression test it - a bent rod woud be quickly confirmed or eliminated. Pretty had to judge to sound from a video clip.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Yes, this definitely isn't a normal 4.0 tick. Sounds like an exhaust leak to me but that's not it, it's something internal.
