My 2015 Taco auto trans shifts into a lower gear when I am going downhill if I tap the brakes. Is this normal? It goes back to drive once I accelerate again.
    Any thoughts?

I had this happen to me so I pulled over and stopped the truck opened the hood and discovered that the mouse who runs inside the wheel was being lazy. Well his wheel speed directly effects how fast the computer that controls the transmission responds to data. Seeing as he is a mouse and dose not understand English I picked him up by the tail and held him up like I was about to eat him. Well he got the message. Now he runs in that mouse wheel of his really fast.

Yep it is normal operation you've got at least one computer in your truck dedicated just to controlling the transmission. It knows when you are going downhill and adjusts accordingly. You can also take advantage of the engine braking effect manually by shifting from D to 4,3,2,1 yourself. Read the owners manual because you don't want to go from D to 1 at 55 MPH it will list the maximum speeds at which you can manually enter a lower gear. Otherwise the little mouse in the wheel dose it automatically.

As a friend told me when I experienced this for the first time .... You may not like it at first but you will learn to manage it and you'll love it. For the most part he was correct. I also think the it's a little different on my 14 than it was on my 06. I liked it better on my 06. The 14 seems to get in the lower gear and it's harder to get it out of it. I find myself giving it more gas than I think that I should to get it to upshift.

depending on the hill I will bump the stick from 4 to d so it shifts. I have one long hill that has a turn in the middle. Mainly coast down it but you gotta slow a little for the turn then back off down hill. Stupid truck down shifts. It is nice on a normal long down hill.

FYI you have full control over how the truck auto downshifts as well.

If say it downshifted to third but you want to be in fourth. Simply go from D to 4th back to D and it will bring it up one gear at a time all the way to 5th.

If you want to go straight back to 5th "coasting" go D to N back to D and it will upshift back all the way to 5th.
