Is this truck worth it?

Good price, body looks pretty good, it's a 2.4/5-speed...it's much higher option than I want (cloth-seat, extended cab SR5), but it's about half the price of anything else I've found.

 

now imagine it with a nice set of black wheels. Id love to find a 5speed ext cab 5 lugger for a good price like that.

 

Did you note the mileage?

 

Almost 1/2 a Million miles.

Unless you can get Maintenance records so you know just what your due to change .

Might be to the point it was going to cost to much to mess with

No doubt a commute into Mass 5 days a week

Then a 2wd truck would need to hide in the garage most of the winter in my case.

Wow. A shit ton of miles were put on by the first two owners.

For $4000, I think you could find a used one from a private sale with less miles.

I would have sold you my 2001 with 175K for $5K.
Just had a new frame put on it and it was one owner. Gone now, so doesn't matter.

 

I can't get the Carfax for some reason.

Wait...the GOVERNMENT bought a 4-year-old truck with 160,000 miles...then put another 200K on it.

This just doesn't make sense................

 

When you see it in person it won't look as good as the photos. There's no way an original seat with those miles has worn that well, or it won't sink you to the floor when you sit in it.

My thoughts...........

Does it meet your requirements as it sits in terms of condition/drivability/equipment? (ie you don't need 4wd)

Does it pass a through mechanical inspection, including brakes, tires, compression (including a leakdown test), suspension wear points, etc. (pay for it if you have to, it will be worth knowing)

Are you a DIYr that can do most inevitable repairs when needed?

Do you have alternate transportation for if/when this might be under repair?

I would start with a cash offer of 3k LESS any known immediate repairs needed found in the professional mechanical inspection. Have the bills in your pocket.

I'd expect you might wind up at $3.5k (less repairs needed), as the seller probably won't have a long line of buyers with that odo reading.

If that's the one you want, good luck with the inspection and negotiation!

That odo reading is telling me you should pass!If you really want the truck i'd try to negotiate the price down cause you're going to need that additional money towards something on the truck one way or another.Good luck!

 

Carfax is overpriced, poor quality toiletpaper imo.

A new engine and tranny are going to cost about 4k, with that many miles I'd expect to spend that in the next year or 2. So is it worth 8k to you?

 

You could find one with way less miles for that money. I wouldn't pay more than 1,000 for a 2wd with that many miles. It's up in the air with miles like that. It very well could just keep on driving right up to a million miles. Then again, you could buy it, then 5,000 miles later the engine throws a rod or the transmission drops out on you, or the rear end grenades. You just never know. Unless you can talk them down on price and have proof of all the maintenance records and repairs done to it, I'd pass.

 

I just noticed the ad says it was purchased for commercial service. That means it was a fleet vehicle used for company work. Meaning the employees that drove it probably rodded the snot out of it and beat it to hell. I'd definitely pass after seeing that, company vehicles are never treated well trust me. I work construction and after seeing the things those guys put company trucks through, I'd never buy one. People just don't care, they don't have to pay for it so they throw caution to the wind when driving it.

 

Yeah, if it has a bad frame! (Or it's 20 years old, or it has no A/C, or it looks like a refugee from Fury Road.) The rust in this area is horrendous.

I wouldn't pay much more than half what they're asking. (Note that it's a dealer, so the truck MUST pass inspection.)
