So I am new to this forum, and soon to be a taco owner. Anyways I was looking at this 2006 Toyota Tacoma with 171k miles on it (from illinoise) that I really liked however the deal breaker was the amount of rust. I live down south and our cars don't rust (salt from icey roads). Anyways I was wondering if you could tell me if this was too much rust. Thanks image.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpg image.jpg image.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpg

Naw, all our vehicles look like that. Mostly just surface rust. He has a good 10-15 years left on it.

That discolored spot next to the square hole is the money spot. That is rotting as we speak. I bet if you hit that spot with a hammer, if it didn't go through, it would at least sound hollow.

That is too much rust. I'm waiting for a frame replacement myself, and my frame overall, looks a lot better than that. If there are a any perforations, it should qualify for a frame replacement as well, however, if the dealer can't find any, they will just coat it w/CRC. I wouldn't want to get stuck with that frame. I would say if you really want that truck, have the seller get the frame inspected by a Toyota dealer. At least that way you will know what you're dealing with.

After my experience 3 months ago with an 04 with a bad frame and now with the 06 I replaced it with in which the frame looked 10 times better than this one you are looking at, I would walk away. Take a look, frame looked new in some areas and then the dealership found this last Wednesday during inspection, now waiting my turn for a new frame...0520151601a.jpg 0520151601.jpg

From what I've read once you register it in the South - Toyota pretends it has always been in the South and doesn't replace the frame. This may have changed but the frame deal was just for the North.

I hate to say it but that's nothing, just wait. My 06 was worse that that when I traded it and I see many more that look worse. Not that it should ever happen, but it will get worse. I has even painted mine with chassis black and it rusted through that.

    What he said.

There are sometimes you buy a vehicle with body rust. If it is a classic you can cut it out and rivet aluminum in, cover it up with bondo, maybe you buy it. This isn't one of those times.

Thinking about buying a 2015 trd sport access cab. 24K. Is this type of rust acceptable? I am inclined to stay away from this and search in a dryer climate. Thoughts?

For a five year old truck, that looks pretty good to me.

That 06 Tacoma frame isn’t that bad. I live in
Pittsburgh and worked as a Service Advisor for Firestone. I’ve seen a lot worse. It’s too far gone to try and coat it with anything. All you will do is seal in the rust and expedite the rotting.

That 06 is bleeding rust from the inside out by the cat. Known weak spot. Good thing you walked away. Not even eligible for frame replacement anymore. Expiration date came and went.

The 2015 is just light surface rust. Wouldn’t be afraid of that. Overall pretty good condition.

When you call a seller of a vehicle your interested in that’s in a rust prone state. Simply ask how he maintained the undercarriage? If he says, what to you mean? Say, never mind, goodbye.
