Any ideas of a fair price for a 2003 DC 4x4 TRD with a rear differential lock that does not work? 145k miles

    New Frame in 2011.

It also needs tailgate and some bed body work (maybe just paint? )

Around here 8k would be a steal.

Really? That tailgate is done, the box has significant damage and that is a replacement rear bumper. Looks like they backed into something or it was rear ended. That plus the diff lock not working and I wouldnt say $8k is a "steal". I would say $8k would be about right but it's hard to tell just from looking at pics.

OP if you are seriously considering it, make sure there is an e-locker and not just a switch and TRD stickers. That is a fairly common scam apparently

Around here being the important part of what I said... Alaska has inflated prices for Tacomas.

That's why I said "really?" and not "you're wrong" haha

The dents and scratches wouldn't bother me because I use my truck for truck things but most people outside tw want mall queens so the damage lowers the value a lot. An everyday person would see that damage as $2k at the body shop and probably $500 for the rear locker repair.

The seller wants $9k. Sounds like the consensus is that is too much?

I found another (silver 02 TRD DC 4x4) with no body damage (body is near perfect) for $9k but it has 190k miles on it and had 3-4 owners.

I wouldn't give more than 8k in the lower 48 (aka contiguous US)

Personally, just from the text I would go with the one that has had less work done on it and more miles, regardless of a new frame or bumper, the question I ask is why did it need a new frame.

It's an '03. They pretty much all do if they were exposed to salt.

Much better than one with a bad frame that the owner never had inspected by Toyota--then you're out of luck.

you would be hard press to find a good Gen 1 Tacoma for 8k or 9k or 10k.
What I have noticed is a good Tacoma will fetch 11k to 13k with 140k less.
I paid 13,900 for mine with 130k miles not a damn leak it was owned by an old man that used it for his fishing boat then traded it to prestige auto in Colorado springs (Porsche and Audi dealer) for a porsche cayenne. I paid toward the higher end but I didn't have to do anything to it, with a long list of new parts done at the dealership. I looked in TX OK CO NM LA and KS, 90% had been beat to shit leaked, all of them but 2 Tacomas I found would grind when engaging the 4wd. I love this truck the only thing that needs to be fixed is the rack and pinion a little bit of play in the steering wheel.

didn't all the automotive companies switch to zinc plateing frames in the mid 90's because of this?

Those TRD stickers don't look like they are in the correct location. You better get a look at that diff and MAKE SURE IT IS a locking axle.

'95-'99 had a buyback program where if the frame was found to have perforation they would buy the truck back at 1.5x book value.

'00-'08 have an inspection and coating and/or replacement program.

Nearly all New England (and other salt using area) trucks from those years have significant frame rust. Toyota sued Dana for the damages and changed frame manufacturers for '09+.
