Worked for about 12 hrs for me the first time. Fixed it again and so far seems ok. Only been a few days though. But I have never soldered anything before so my skills not so good. If it fails again, I will try replacing the resistor and if still no good, I'll just buy the replacement on Amazon and be done.

Thanks to the original poster and subsequent advise to replace the resistors.
After re-soldering more than a few times I picked up a couple of 51 ohm resisters and replaced the surface mount ones.
Left the wire a little longer to help dissipate any heat and with insulation so they wont short out.
Not the cleanest solder job but working again.

    Hey all
    First post here at TW...
Just swooped a 2015 trd sport
    has NO temp or compass...

So upon reading this post I thought to myself can I use the insert and board/display from the 05'-08 in my 15?

I found a complete setup on ebay
I just dont know if the insert fits into the sunglasses holder

    anyone know?
    Thanks
    TeK

Usually Toyota will include the wiring harnesses for options that might not even be installed. But since the 2015 compass, which is in the rearview mirror now, means the harness for the 05-08 style compass will probably be missing.

    thanks for the reply 9000!

The sports dont have the digital mirror and Im not lookn to use the gentex version...

Id like to retrofit the early gauge type into the overhead on my 15'
    and keep the basic mirror...

I guess I just need to know if the surround from the 05-08' fits into the glasses holder of the later overhead...
It sure looks like it will but Im lookn for a bit of conformation before I drop the coin on ebay..

It's a shame but you can't directly thank the OP as he left TW some years ago.
I'll let him know his usefulness on TW lives on.

    I actually did this.
I moved my 2006 compass to the newer 2014 overhead with the MIC in the center between the lights.
Some plastic trimming will be needed where the sunglass holder swivels to fit flush.

How'd you the get the gauge to read temp and compass?

I thought the newer models are wired differently. Interested cause that front glasses holder is useless.

A reminder to the folks about to resolder their boards:

1.) make sure the solder doesn't bridge, especially to the through-hole next to one of the resistors. (the small, round copper areas). This is a board-destroying short.

2.) I strongly recommend you follow the DIY guide here. If you don't, your repair is going to fail again at some point in the not-so-distant future.

3.) solder quickly and accurately! Heat from your gun / iron may be destroying components nearby. Press the clean, tinned iron to the junction of the board and resistor and immediately feed solder. You should get a nice shiny fill.

Here's a video on how to pop off the clamshell without breaking any tabs:

I started a thread asking if anyone continually has problems with their temp/compass in hot weather climates. Figured I'd ask in here as well. We just hit our first 100+ degree day last week and my gauge went out. It seems to do this every summer. Last summer I had to do this twice. After the 2nd time it was good and no problems until last weekend. 2 summers ago I only had to solder once to fix it and it was fine. Overall, this will be the 4th time I've had to do this in the last 3 summers. Anyone else have the same problem?

Thanks to original author and all who contributed. My 08 went out (first time) last month. Found this solution and it worked! There is so much great info here it makes it fun to work on again.
I was not sure about the clips when you remove the console (no images on my iPad). I found one on the plastic piece that is inserted back in and the other hiding behind the insert point (metal). Reposition both metal clips before reinserting. It looks and works like new again.
