Even though I live in Chico, I am not a native of the area so I am looking for decent remote locations to camp. Maybe up to 2-3hrs away or less, would like to take my truck on some newbie to moderate trails. Would like to go running 7-10miles while I am out there and do some mountain biking and if it's near water some fishing.

I have been to lake Almanor but looking for a little more newbie adventures!

    Any suggestions appreciated.

    Thanks!

A lot of crap and too much money spent
I keep hearing about Gold Lake. There is a trip in July time frame.
I used to live there but didn't do a lot of camping when I was living there. I hear bucks lake is pretty good and I always liked going to Quincy and camping while I was there.

Ishi wilderness up out of Red Bluff back through Paynes Creek. Tons of trails for 4x4ing runs and biking. Butt Lake, Lost Creek, and a ton more up towards Shasta. Let's not forget the Trinity Alps. All within 2-3 hours of Chico.

Went on a one night camping trip with my son up Highway 70, what a gorgeous drive. Did some fishing and a little exploring of the Feather River. We had a good time.

Chico is the gateway to many adventures! Gold Lake is cool, but too crowded for me. Lassen National Park has many wonderful places to explore and isn't too far away. Also, headed towards the coast you have the Yolla Bolly Wilderness with many great hikes and streams to play in or on. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yolla_Bolly–Middle_Eel_Wilderness

If you drive up by the supports in the left side of the road thirty minutes up the 70 you can hike five minutes to a dope swimming hole on rock creek.

There is also beer can beach but there are a lot of college students there this time of year. Fun rope swing though.

The other side of Lassen Park, by hat creek. You'd take 99 to red bluff, then get on the 36 east and Pop out in shingle town and take the 44 east toward Lassen. You can go the back way up the 32 toward mineral and cut over and go through lassen park.

Man, burney reminds of burney falls. Those pics of lassen look awesome. I need to go camping there.

You can go up 32 and be at Potato Patch or Elam campgrounds in under an hour. Or go up 32 to 36 west and find Gurnsey. All sweet places to camp. I assume you are looking for dry camping.

Potato Patch is great. The wife and I hit it up at least twice a year when we lived in Chico.
