Been crawling around the inside of my old 1956 210,,getting it ready for a double coat of paint. Cut, weld, grind, sand,,in that order. I am seeing scotch bright wheels and pads in my sleep. Setting up a desiccant filter line,,to keep the ugly water at bay when I shoot color. But yes,,the perfect temps for doing that sort of thing,,and I am behind schedule on the shooting paint thing,,but I needed a TW fix.

Some very cool pics jen, Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Mod!! Good luck on your project, nice we are both getting the weather we need for this!!

I am so excited to get started on the topper this morning!! Thought about taking the pressure washer to it to see how it did on that old paint, but probably not a great idea. I can see myself getting too aggressive with it and doing more harm than good. Sanding, sanding, sanding..........this is gonna be awhile!! Can't complain when the sun's out though!

Any wacky ideas you care to suggest for how to paint the topper?

Thought about saving myself the cash on the personalized plates and instead stenciling Jen's 1st Gen on the topper? Or perhaps a cinnamon roll stenciled on? Hmmm.....or lovemytacolots? Or, Taco World rocks?...............whatcha got guys? Borescopes rock? :D

EDIT: how bout a photo of the piston hole with a big skull and crossbones, like a poison sign type thing?

OOH!! Crazy missing electrode lady? Wait, that's not a very flattering title to label myself/my truck with publicly........although I suppose I already did that seeing as how this is the internet and all........hmmm.......:D

No ideas for the paint scheme for the bed cap. I figured you would just leave it black. That way, whenever you picked up a cool decal from cool place, the decal would show up. I like those oval decals that show the various places people have been.

    Oooh, I like that idea!

Although my current topper idea is to paint the sides and enough of the edges of the top surface black so that it looks completely black from the sides, but then paint a rectangle in the middle of the top white, where I can stencil away with something like Jen's 1st Gen! Then stencil lovemytacolots on the sides kinda small.

So I'm thinking I can get away with just wearing a regular dust mask while sanding this thing. Figure I should since it's fiberglass, right?

Do I need to wear gloves ya think?

Is using the little sander's bagger good enough for disposing of the dust I'll create?

Better tell little 1.5 yr old Emily across the street to stay away while I'm doing this. She looks across every morning and yells, "TACO!" It's hilarious, she enunciates that word better than any other!! Then she wants to run over and play in the bed of the truck, every single day. Likes looking at herself in the reflection of the back windows and likes being "as tall as the adults" : ) She starts dancing in there to our country tunes and we have a regular redneck hoedown going on out there! : )

Ah, is something along these lines what you are planning this June? Steens/Alvord area? Sounds like a blast.

You ever been up on those roads going to the Chalk Basin area, just north of Rome, heading along the west side of the Owyhee river? I really want to explore that area this summer sometime, but those roads look long and brutal.

You ever been down to the 3 Forks area, south of Jordan Valley? Did you eat in Fields? That place has some awesome food : ) And I really want to go back to the Alvord Hot Springs, that place is AWESOME!!! There were a few campsites we saw along that road it's on, a little north of there on the west side of that road. Do you camp or get hotels or what when you go to that area? You ever try that Crystal Crane Hot Springs place?

Did you do the hike down to Wildhorse Lake? It looked super steep when we went up there, so we didn't do it but still got awesome views of the lake and surrounding mountains looking down at it.

Here's some pics of the Alvord Hot Springs when we were there in 2013:

Ive always been a jennings/haggard/jones fan.
Never been to nashville, but would like to go sometime..
A buddy of mine who is a local bluegrass player turned me on to to sturgill simpson just last week, said he got tickets to go see him in june or july. I might go, not sure yet.
Definantly no replacement for waylon- but good music none the less.

Heres some good music straight out of nashville.

Oooh, listening now, I like it! Do you like Alison Krauss? I love her music. Definitely my favorite bluegrass musician.

We really like the Deadwood soundtrack album, lots of good bluegrass type songs on there. Love the show too, definitely a favorite, along with Hell on Wheels!!! Makes exploring Oregon's history even more interesting too, seeing different stuff that went on back in the 1800's on those shows - cuz I sure don't remember the history stuff I learned in school!!

Starting to rethink the topper plan. Just googled some stuff about safety precautions to sand fiberglass, and it sounds like I need an astronaut's suit basically!! That sounds hot and miserable, not fun. Mask, goggles, gloves, all that crap. Blah. Thought it would be fun, but if it's gonna suck, I'd rather just have an ugly topper! :)

Pressure washing is way more fun than suiting up for toxic projects. Hmmm. Maybe we need to spray some red paint streaks on the black areas and make it look like intentional red/black streaks? Like a work of art? :D

WHOA!! Just realized, it IS the two primary Toyota colors, red and black. Screw sanding, I'm thinking of a way to work with this!! :D

Um? Didn't you just redo your entire kitchen? You exposed yourself to many of the same pathogens. Just take some basic PPE steps and you will be fine. The issues you are reading about are from people who do this kind of work 8 hr a day for 30 years. You will still be taking steps that are 100% better than our grand parents did.

If you already have a respiratory condition, then yes, you might think about hiring it out.

Don't disappoint us. We saw how rapidly your knowledge of the operation of a fuel injected, internal combustion engine grew exponentially, painting this topper is going to be anticlimactic, if you want my opinion.

I love painting toppers. You can paint one side at a time and you can prop up the side you are painting to reduce runs in the paint. You can't do that with vehicles unless you take the panel completely off. Yours will be easier with that skunk strip on the top:)

I used to paint cars way back when, and we got a Cadillac in that had been painted in California with water-based paint and wasn't prepped very well. I stripped nearly the entire car with compressed air. If you can get under a paint edge, that stuff just flies off.

If you paint it it's probably easier to remove the windows and doors instead of masking them. I've taken windows out of toppers to fix screens. They were held in by a bunch of hex head screws on the inside.

What's the best way to clean the inside really thoroughly? Can I pressure wash that too?
