Went to my dealer yesterday and had the TSB for engine knock reflashed. Was asked if I wanted a complementery systems check. What I got back was an official looking paper with numerous items that were checked by the tech. Because I am towing a 5000lb trailer next week I filled my front tires to 35 lbs and rear to 40 lbs. The systems check showed all tires were ok and registered 32 lbs., including the spare. When I got home I wanted to recheck the pressures and found the pressures to be 35 front and 40 rear The spare was 24 lbs. My question is can I trust that theTSB was done as I know that the tires were never checked. I called the delearship and spoke to the service manager. He said the tech went home sick and the TSB was done. I would rather not have them do a free check and give me wrong info.

I think it kind of depends. I have found some people at dealers to be really good and honest and some not so much. I have always kind of wondered this too. But it may have been a simple mistake because if they reported something wrong to you and then you had an accident they would have a big liability on their hands.

My dealer does that automatically on recalls, but I've already noted where the diff plugs and other things were before it went in. Lo and behold there is no evidence of some things being touched that they claim were checked.

Also. Each tire pressure guage is not entirely accurate. Some of them are miscalibrated and I have had i happen to me before too where one reads a certain PSI and the other reads it several psi lighter or higher. No to defend the dealer but that could had been the case here.

Had a similar experience with a dealership (also the one who did my knock TSB for me) who said that my air filter was a "yellow" on their inspection sheet despite me putting in a brand new one the day before they got the truck. My solution was to never go back to that dealership.

As for the knock TSB being done or not, if you didn't notice the pinging/lugging before, it's going to be hard to say. For most people there's a hill/road/mountain that their truck ALWAYS pinged on before the TSB, so it's easy to tell if anything was done to it. FWIW, my truck felt like it was shifting (AT) like you'd expect...not racing to get to 5th and then lugging the engine.

unfortunatly the only way you are going to know for sure if the ECU was reflashed is to look on a techstream computer as to what the current ECU flash is.... i purchased a 25 dollar OBD to USB techstream cable to do just this as the dealer i went to did not put the sticker under the hood stating the reflash was done. The reflash had been completed and i now have that peace of mind.

OP it says you are in ventura county? What dealer did you get it done at? Also if you want we can hook my computer to your truck and check, im right in camarillo.

When you get old an ugly like me, you will realize...NIOTHING IS FREE..!! "Free" is a term used by scammers to suck in greedy people that want something for nuttin'...!!

It really works if done correctly...!

You are right to verify things BEFORE taking your truck in to a Dealer.. NOT all dealers are nice people... some ARE scammers.!!!

That's my two cents worth...Oops, I forgot...we don't got no "cents" in Canada no more, so I guess it's my 5 cents worth...!!

Reflash was done at DCH Toyota in Oxnard. I dont have any problem with that dealership. In fact they have helped me out in the past. I have the problem with the tech. A few minutes ago the service manager called and said how sorry he was and was glad I called and told him. He also offered a free detail when I get back from my flyfishing trip.

LOLOLOL .... i showed up to Oxnard toyota shortly after this TSB came available as i had made an appointment to have it done. They literally told me and i shit you not "Go to another dealer, we just did this TSB on another tacoma and bricked the ECU and had to replace the entire unit, you dont want us doing it"

The ONLY dealer in ventura county i have found so far that has been competent to some extent is Simi valley Toyota. Ventura toyota with Yawn and Scott is a god damn joke (i was under my truck showing yawn - head service tech, how to read driveline angels for a TSB and they still ordered the wrong parts)... and TO toyota is just full of idiots who dont know what the hell they are talking about.

That stated, i STILL dont trust simi toyota as they did not do the TSB for the pining by the book and didnt put a sticker on the underside of the hood stating what ecu revision they flashed.

Either way Bob, i have the stuff to see what ECU revision they flashed your ECU with. Take me about 5 min from starting up my computer to reading the ECU let me know if you want to meet up.
