YES!!! I love these little inside scoop DP tips!! Thanks DP! :)

EDIT: Just cuz I wanted to get under DP's skin ;)

EDIT #2: For real edit this time! We do that too DP - use these as back up, but not to GPS but rather to the high quality detailed color BLM paper maps that we actually pay for. Those were a pain to get on short notice, had to drive downtown to some little store that's like never open.

DP, you done any research on Blue Bucket Mine/Meek's Cutoff trail? I want to explore that area too. Maybe find the lost gold!

EDIT #3: I thought of a new idea on this trip. Print a bunch of copies of the zoomed in portion of the map that I know I will use most/be confused by most. Then you can make notes on all your copies, and also not be fumbling to fold a map the size of the Taco inside the cab. Eric really LOVES that, when I start folding the map and block his view of the road, usually as we approach a cliff, or a semi :D

@Dirty Pool , you ever go to Hells Canyon? We visited the historic Kirkwood Ranch on a jet boat tour through there on the Snake River, and they had so many cool pieces of antique farm equipment, it was really neat. So beautiful there too! Bet you'd like that place if you haven't been yet.

    Beautiful photos of the area.

If I'm not happy with the BLM map I ordered, I'll try the USGS site again. Just now I could zoom all over but it wasn't obvious how to get free maps.

I agree, that site is kind of a pain. I had to mess around with it forever to remember how to get the maps, it'd been a couple years since I used the site. If you click on the area map you want using the "mark points" then click on the red marker that comes up, a list drops down of map options. Click on any map (I think), then another page comes up that lists some maps and their prices. Click on the map you want, then on the next page that comes up, click on the image of the map. You'll get an option to download it and save it. Just in case you want them for back up :D

Just finished pressure washing the inside of the topper, washing the truck sparkly clean, using goof off about 100 places, and final detail pressure washing of the outside of the topper. Time to commit to sanding or painting or some sort of next step. Still all over the place about this one. Might sleep on it one more night before next steps. Think I'll detail the Taco more!!

I have a question about painting something that I can't get the rust off. Posting pics in a second........

What can I do to these things? What the hell are they called anyway? Schwab wants $60 for a new set, screw that. Bought some spray paint that actually looks like it would match but can't get the rust off. Tried steel wool, scrubby pads, pressure washer :) nothing is working to remove the rust. Can I just spray paint them anyway?

How bad would it be to just leave the topper as is, even though the clear coat on the red is gone? What will happen if I don't do anything else to it, even don't bother putting a new clear coat on it?

I really don't care that much about it matching colors.........but my neighbor said if we don't clear coat it at least, then we go ahead and put stickers/decals on it, the stickers/decals will turn into nasty gummy sludge in no time, think she's right?

I still order paper maps off the USGS...I like the 7.5 and 15 minute series.

toss em in the trash, clean and paint the hubs black. much cleaner and better look altogether. plus once its gone it wont be bleeding rust all over the aluminum rims

you only need those stupid center caps to hide the bearing hub and grease cap which we don't have but if your rim is thick you may want "something" to hide the hole

there is no stopping rust like that once it gets started and you can buy new ones for $10 so its not worth the work to strip em down to bare metal and paint them (if not badly pitted as most are) so if you still feel the need for center caps look here: https://www.google.com/search?q=cen...microsoft:en-US:IE-Address&ie=&oe=&gws_rd=ssl

I like these low profile type: http://www.quadratec.com/products/9..._RZZ__gWltNBaFI9_1S9VJ9EjmC1bQsV9RRoC05Tw_wcB no need for big cones sticking out getting in the way of cleaning your rims. if you aren't sure about size go by any rim store and they will show you what out there for your rims but I suggest you get the size info from them and buy them online for much cheaper

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
Those are wheel center caps, Jen and they turn to shit (I bet you would have to cut them off to remove them) I bought a new set from a 4X4 shop for $8.75 ea or you could use a rust remover gel like KRUD KUTTER [IMG] to clean them up nicely..

OK, going up to a local auto body paint/detail place tomorrow with photos of the old beast, will pick their brains.

Then this weekend Eric's doing shocks, and I am painting the topper!! And doing something with those wheel cap things while he's got tires off! :D

I vote for tossing the caps on the wheels.

If you are ok with red, leave it as it is. As for the decals turning into a gooey mess, it's not likely. The only thing that will happen is the red will fade over the years. No big deal. You have a useful, working, playing truck. I see no reason for having a showroom paint job. What's important is what's under the paint.

Jen most of those things are standard sized but take one with you and run to a nearby chrome wheel seller or 4x4 outfitter and they will have something you can pick out and match to your old one.

just look for low profile so its easier when cleaning the rims

I have the stock steel wheels so I pulled my oem triangle shaped center caps off and sold em on ebay then I painted the hubs black and they look so much better then those lame looking stock caps ever did.
