2017 Ranger is most likely going to be based on the Transit platform. The world Ranger is 90% the size of the current F150. That's not medium sized. If they were coming out with a Transit based Ranger this fall I'd be buying it instead of a Gen 3 Tacoma.

Officially, Ford says it is still "all in" on investing and expanding the F-Series lineup for North America with a focus on new powertrains and improved fuel efficiency, but a midsize pickup doesn't fit into current plans.

"The compact pickup segment in the U.S. has been declining - from almost 8 percent of total industry sales in 1994 to 1.5 percent of industry sales in 2014," said Mike Levine, Ford truck communication manager. "The F-Series works best for customers in North America. The all-new 2015 Ford F-150 with the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V-6 has better EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings than V-6-powered midsize pickups from Toyota and GM, as well as better payload and towing capability."

While other similarly sized midsize pickups sold in the U.S. and abroad have had different dimensions (the Toyota Hilux and Tacoma, and Nissan Frontier and Navarra come to mind), the new 2016 Ford Ranger seems to be both similar in size to some existing midsize pickups as well as too close in size to an F-150. Looking at the dimensions compared to the current Toyota Tacoma, we see the Ford Ranger is just a bit taller and longer while not quite as wide.

Our guess is that Ford will only green-light a new U.S. Ranger if it could build it economically, make it on a smaller platform, give it much better fuel efficiency than the F-150, and offer it with a much lower price tag. No matter how you look at it, that's an unlikely set of circumstances that needs to come into alignment.

I agree Mike2810 but some are saying it will happen. The current world Ranger is not mid sized. It is however selling extremely well in the markets it's in. It is the #1 seller of all vehicles in South Africa. I'm sure Ford would like to see the F150 do that here.

If the Navarra/Frontier is about the same size as the Colorado and can carry the load it would do. That's if they bring that here. I want to buy a new truck this fall and if it isn't a Tacoma AC TRD Sport it may have to be an F150. It has to carry 1000 lbs which my 23 year old Ranger still does safely when I'm hauling firewood.

    Width 1,882 mm (74.1 in)
    Height 1,781 mm (70.1 in)

    Ford Ranger (T6)
    Wheelbase 3,226 mm (127.0 in)
    Length 5,359 mm (211.0 in)
    Width 1,849 mm (72.8 in)
    Height 1,815 mm (71.5 in)

That's right from Wikipedia. While the Ranger has a longer wheel base everything else is within an 1" or smaller than the Colorado. People forget that the Colorado is considered to be a pretty large sized truck outside of NA too. If Chevrolet can pass that off as a midsized then Ford can too.

That being said all I've heard is a rumour from a third party. It could be all smoke. Then again, Ford is very good at keeping vehicle development under wraps right up until announcement. No one had any idea Ford had been working on aluminum since 2009 and the Ecoboost since the mid 2000's until the products were ready to go. Both caught GM with there pants down.

Good points Sterdog. 17' will fit my garage without much change. My CR-V is 15' and cutting down my garage woodbox would easily accommodate a Colorado, Ranger, or Tacoma. Our circumferential interstate speed limit was just upped to 70 and the Ranger doesn't get good mileage at 5 over that. A T6 sized truck is also narrower and lower than the F150. Width on that truck approaches 9'. It's garagable but the 2nd vehicle better not be full sized. I think an aluminum Ranger with an Ecoboost 2L would be awesome. I've commented before that I was ready to buy a Colorado V6 4x4 but the seats bolsters are awful. My needs are hauling wood for my stove and daily driver with better MPG than my current ride. Oddly enough, I still like my shiny Ranger XLT except for the rattles and squeaks that 23 years brings. Also, I now need 4WD. I would like to see 21 MPG on a regular basis as well.

It just irks me that people are too lazy to search forums. I can understand newbies doing it, but guys that have been here since 2011 should know the forum pretty well enough by now to search.

As a whole, I don't see the point in posting Colorado threads on a Tacoma forum in the first place is all.

You do realize this IS the 3rd gen section and the article was posted as a comparison to how the 3rd gen sales will compete.....are you lost, drunk, or both?

I don't care, there's a whole thread dedicated to the topic so why do people have to make more? Just wasting bandwidth and cluttering up the forum. Besides that more people are subscribed to that thread so if you post Colorado topics there you are more likely to get a response anyway.

Back seat of the Colorado crew cab is way roomier and comfy than the Tacoma's.
