    Shit happens I guess.

I was fairly impressed with my dealer service techs. Took it in for first change was a bit cautious. Talked to the guy at the counter some how I got to mentioning the little rocks in my tires guess he had asked if I'd done any offroafing yet. I said it used to be a habit man FOD to pull those out. The guy laughed and asked what I did told him I was a ground support mechanic in the Air Force. Turns out the guy was retired Army had been a UH-60 crew chief so we shot the shit for a minute.

Anyway they did the service wouldn't you know they'd got every little rock out of each tire. I have to say that really impressed me most places give zero fucks if you have rocks and other debris in you tread. And here I'd made a joke about it and they went ahead and de-FODed the tires for me.

Of course my dealer is close to Ft.Campbell so likely half the staff is ex-Army or other branch of service.

So where does the oil from the filter drain too if you "don't need a catch bottle"?

You poke a hole while the filter is still attached to the engine and it drains back into the engine itself before you remove it. The hole provides a way for air to get into the filter so it doesn't act like a vacuum. Kinda like putting your finger over your straw when you pull it out of your soda to keep liquid in it. It's actually really smart. Kinda one of those "why didn't I think of that?" things. Credit to 1MK for sharing! Learn something new everyday!

A little off topic but that actually happened to me. Noticed mine was gone right away so I went back inside to ask. They told me that the little rubber nipple cap was disposable after first oil change and that I didn't need it. Told them I wanted one anyways and they said it was. $12 part.

Not a major horror story like OP and others have had. But still pissed me off. I do all my own stuff now if possible.

LOL. I would have told them that I bought this truck with ALL the parts included. It's for me to determine what is 'disposable', don't throw away what I paid for. :)

I did my own oil changes on my past Tacomas. Partly because it's so damn easy. And partly because I enjoy it.

But my new one has 60K maintenance included. So they own it.

FYI, if you leave you filter on long enough while the oil drains, the oil drains from the filter and you won't need a catch bottle as no oil will drip out of the filter. Now, the question is, how long does it take? Not sure, I didn't start the truck for several days before chaining the oil. I put a catch can under the drain hole and removed the filter. To my surprise, no oil left in the filter.

I asked why a disposable part with a part# is $12. He didn't have an answer. That was the extent of my frustration.

Ended up test driving a couple new Tacomas last year to see if I wanted a newer 2015. Let's just say I have the "disposable " part on my truck again.

To be honest it's a simple mistake that I'm sure several people have made on here. I have forgotten the same thing before. It's not the end of the world. The filter doesn't hold that much oil. I have done my oil change before and just let it drain straight out of the filter and tried to catch it with a towel. A little oil won't hurt,my truck is in a lot worse shape and I'm still running fine at 90k miles

I hope this never happens to me. I can't change my own oil because the dealership I got my truck from gives you power train for life warranty as long as you do any and all required maintenance through them.

I'd rather do it myself but I can't ruin that kind of warranty.

Ive had 3 oil changes so far on my 2014, and haven't had any issues, and they even apologized to me that they couldn't wash my truck because of the racks. so far so good. 2 more to go and will go back to get em done.

Unless its for major repair that is beyond my level, i won't take my tacoma for its free oil changes.

I won't name names because its family, but my wifes uncle owns a Caddy dealer. He is having his 19 year old son work in the oil changing stations this summer. The kid knows squat about cars other than driving them and "thinking" everything he drives is fast. Can you imagine buying a brand new Caddy and then finding out some kid who never changed oil in his life is changing your oil? Screw that.

Same thing happened to me last year at the dealership. I felt stupid for not even looking under the hood when they finished the oil change, and after a couple of days of a faint weird noise I looked and found this. Fortunately the bottle didn't rupture and the serpentine belt was OK. I marched into the service department furious, with the goal of trying to get a free box of filters or something but they wouldn't budge. They did offer to replace the serp. belt but I looked really closely and it was fine.
