Had to do a smog check on my 05 tacoma for the first time today...

-installed a K&N 63-9025 cold air intake probably 3-4 years ago...

-i guess its illegal in california now? Since my truck didnt pass smog because of it

-i threw away the stock air filter when i installed the K&N i figured i wouldnt ever need it

What do you guys think I should do ? Do you think if I called up K&N they could do something? Really lame I love my cold air intake:(

I used to live in California. Their vehicle laws are beyond ridiculous. K&N may be able help, but I doubt they would do much. It might be one of those things that you have to swap out each time it is smogged.

K&N cannot help u..... The intake bypasses the charcoal filter and therefore makes it illegal. U must find a used stock intake to borrow if u wanna pass legit.

I talked a store manager into selling me one last year and told her it was for an off road race truck and never on road..... I was very lucky, she had to ring it up as a gift card purchase even...... Illegal to sell in or to ca

If you're in SD, you might want to try a junkyard before paying the dealer. I know up off the 67 is a junkyard just for trucks

Go to a different smog checker. Some test units are calibrated looser then others

Seriously? Im fromm a non smog state, so these threads interest me. I work with industrial gas boilers, so am familiar with exhaust gas testing. I never knew you could be failed by visual only.

This is also why the TRD intake looks soo different now than it used to. It used to delete the charcoal filter and was illegal, copycat of the afe stage 2si.....
Now its a different design, and legal.... Flawed and causes lean conditions, but legal

Visual PLUS emissions for smog here. Anything visually amiss gets you a fail, regardless of the emissions results.

This is nothing new, any change has to have a CARB issued exemption and should come with a sticker stating it.

That being said, shit can that K & N anyways, they dont filter small particulates well enough and they are not going to give you any extra horsepower.

I'm in San Diego and it's been a while but I used to have a K&N intake on my 1st gen Taco. Passed smog no problem. This must be a newer thing?

They were never really legal for use in CA even though you could buy them pretty much anywhere. But over the last few years they've really cracked down on these things. I couldn't even order a intake pre-filter on Amazon a few months ago.

Needed a CARB legal sticker on any intake, at least since I was in high school. Graduated in 2003, so it's been awhile.
