The Tepui Anti-Condensation Mat is the highest quality mat and the one for the Tepui Kukenam should fit your Mombasa tent with no cutting. PM me if your interested and I can get you one with a TW discount.

    ..fiine.

you guys made me do it.

I signed up for the tepui group buy.

I am debating between the autana sky and the autana ruggedized.

    A few questions:

    1. Any big differences on the diamand plate support verses the standard aluminum cap sheet?

    2. The annex area provides private access to your back door on the autana sky set up. How is the contact between the tent fabric to the vehicle? Like during windy days, or rain, what is done to prevent weather from penetrating the "contact" between vehicle and tent for the annex area?

    3. Does the autana sky have internal pockets like the autana ruggedized? I didn't see any mention of pockets on the website for the autana sky.

    4. Both have the sleeping footprint of 56'' x 96'', capacity for three. Only myself and the girlfriend will be using it. Any comments on the space? I laid it out and think its big enough for two, but you know how the 'feel' always changes when youre in it.

The only differences I see between the two models are:

    1. Autana sky opens up larger, cap sheets are different, the autana ruggedized has thicker fabric, autana sky is lighter.. anything else i am missing?

Only ones I can answer really,

    1) Yes huge differences. Weight and "toughness" i guess, I have seen the ladder wear holes into the aluminum backing on friends' tents where mine is perfectly fine, the diamond plate will last a lot longer.

    2) You can stake out the annex so that it is right about against your truck, other than that not much.. Although its pretty hard for rain to get in there anyway.

    4) Its the perfect size for 2 people plus some gear (clothes, shoes etc...) basically its the size of a queen size bed.

As for differences there are a lot. The Autana sky doesn't open up any larger than the other Autanas.. But the canvas material, the cover is bigger, insulated poles on the inside, the ruggedized comes with the anti condensation mat ($100 option for the sky), diamond plate backing, and a few other things im not thinking of

That would scare the crap out me camping there. Seen too many cliff sides give out.
    Beautiful view though.

Who is doing this "Group Buy"? It's not an official Tepui one.

    As for your questions....
1: Definitely a big difference in the diamond plate base on the Ruggedized models The standard aluminum cap sheets can dent if the ladder bumps around on it when the tent is closed. Ruggedized tents are just way more durable all around.

2:If I get what you're asking, there is not some kind of "sealed" connection between the annex and the truck. But the access point from the annex to the truck is a zippered door. If you want to keep weather out, zip it closed. If you need to get into the truck, unzip it.

3:No the Autana sky does not have the same number of extra pockets that the Ruggedized model does.

4: I think the Autana/Kukenam tents are the perfect size for 2 people. It's a comfortable size and leaves some room left over for gear inside the tent.

    Onto the Difference....
1: the Autana Sky has the Sky windows in the roof of the tent. Ruggedized model does not. The Ruggedized also has these features that the Sky does not.
    Heavier Canvas
Heavy duty diamond plate aluminum base and frame
    Wrapped internal frame
    Anti-condensation mat included.
the Annex is the same "Ruggedized" canvas
Extra pockets inside and outside the tent
Tie down points on the base of the tent for things like shoe baskets etc.
    Special Edition Olive Green color
Expedition Orange color (Neither of these colors are offered on the Sky).

That is the coolest place. I just looked it up. How long was the drive to that spot? Did you need to buy permits and was it crowded? haha sorry for all the questions! This just showed up at the top of my bucket list!

Yeah I found it. Just so people know, this is NOT an official Tepui group buy. Nothing against the organizer of the group buy, nor am I saying he's trying to pass it off as an official one but people shouldn't get the wrong idea. This group buy is merely a customer buying a large number of tents and then reselling them. It could be a great opportunity for more people to get into some of the best tents on the market, but realize there is some risk in these types of group buys since you don't have the direct backing of the company.

From the local town of Tusayan to the point, with the conditions we did it in was about an hour and a half. You could probably do it faster but I cruised to be respectful of the Tribal Reservation.

Yes, you need a have a back-country reservation with the National Forest Service since the point is on NPS land, and a written permit by a Havasupai Indian offical. We ran into 2 other people camping there as it was a holiday weekend, but there is enough space and a few different areas to claim your own spot.

Wow I really want to do this now. Definitely would cruise slow just to admire the whole place! I was looking it up and the trail seems pretty easy with a 4x4. Any rough spots I should watch for if I go this summer? I don't have the most built truck and don't want to get half way there and have to turn around! Thanks!

The trail is actually very easy. I'm sure a 2wd truck would have no issues if the ground was dry.

With the elevation, it'd probably be tolerable in summer. Also the tree's would offer plenty of shade. Not sure about hiking though if that's your thing.

Definitely depends on the person. I have a lot more fun covering ground in a vehicle and getting to camp somewhere new every night then spend a day hiking.

I'm sure there are a lot of areas that are beautiful and you'd only be able to appreciate it on foot, but different strokes for different folks. ;)

    Remote area, all to yourself.

My girlfriend and I are decent hikers. We were thinking of going in September. We both go to UCSB and we don't start back up until the very end of the month. I think the weather should have cooled somewhat by then but not cool enough to be too cold at night. We have both been to the canyon a few times as well!
Thank you for your pics! That helped me convince my girlfriend that we need to go! I think we are going to try for September. Do you have a suggestion how far in advance we should get permits?

Definitely going to be one of the coolest trips ever and I get to take the truck out for some fun! Now I just gotta get a roof top tent and a bed rack before then!!

    Thanks again!

Hey guys. I'm looking at buying my first rtt. I wanted to get your opinion of a couple of them. My girlfriend and I are the only two who will be using it so we are looking for smaller ones. The lower cost is another plus. We really like the CVT Mt. Cayley because of the overhang and the annex. However, I found a brand called Tuff Stuff that makes almost the same tent and comes with the annex for 200 dollars cheaper. What do you guys think about this one? I've never seen anybody on here with one.

The tent in the link is cheaper just because it comes with the 200 dollar annex for free instead of having to add it on.
We thought about a bigger one but we've been sleeping in a truck bed tent between the wheel wells so even the small tent is an improvement. My girlfriend is pretty small and I'm not huge so it should be alright. It all depends on my cash on hand when I pull the trigger though. Also, I'm mounting it on a Prinsu AccessRac so I think smaller would be better because the rack is smaller.

Thank you! The major thing I am worried about is warranty that I feel I would get at Tepui or CVT, but not so much Amazon random tent.

I believe all cvt tents come with the annex now. Maybe someone that has recently bought a cvt can add some insight

If that is true I would be so happy haha. I also heard that CVT gives a 10% discount to TW members? If that is true then I'll be ordering very soon.

Haha I actually did that this morning. I looked at the sleeping dimensions and it's very long. 96" but not that wide. About 8" narrower than a full mattress. We both somehow fit on a twin air matress currently so I was stoked to see that improvement!!
