image.jpg so I made a custom box for two 10" JL's.. But it was not nearly enough bass. Now I'm going to stuff a 15" back there...somewhere.. Anyone interested in this box? It's not perfect, but it gets the job done.

I've heard the new-day Hifonics gear isn't what it used to be back in the 90s.....

thats LOOKS like the 1216D amp, but loudness wouldn't quite be based on quality either in a way so it may not be what they used to be, if the amp does rated power it should rated power. Are you running it at 1 ohm ?

For the op, id recommend you stuff what ever you want back there based on my pm recommendation and get 1500-2000 wrms. Anything more than that, you wont find speakers that will take the power, and fit behind the seat

The highest I have found for peak RMS so far is around 600, which was a shallow mount 15".

haha, my dad has two of those in his entertainment room at his house, they sound really good. I don't think they will fit behind my back seat though.

again, you don't need shallow mount,
you simply need subs that are under 6-7Inch MAX depth and with some effort can make them work with enough air space. With a 15 of any sorts you are stuck with a sealed application again

    Also, what is peak rms,
    Rms is RMs
peak watts is peak watts, which is a useless measure to confuse those that don't know better

Ill compile a list of subs that would meet these requirements,
Although some might not appear to handle rated, they would take/ handle the power category without any issues...... as long as its CLEAN power, i.e not distorted, clipped, driving the amp to hard, have a strong electrical to support the amps power requirements

This. I have a 90's Zeus 500.1 monoblock that still rocks as of today. It's got so many hours of use and abuse.

I haven't tested my head unit for distortion yet, going to do that tonight. I appreciate your help!

The one i have is a ZRX1000.1 monoblock that has been through hell and back with my previous ignorance to audio setups.

While the head unit can be a source of distortion,
Im not as much worried about that as an amp not getting enough juice in conjunction with a gain not set properly.
What we do is , find at what volume your head unit starts to show signs of clipping
Take 1 point down, should be clean signal from that point. Then once we know that value, we go down the line. For simplicity sakes ignoring a few other aspects and things. Some amps come with a output voltage range, Set deck to pre-determined volume, Turn gain on amp till voltage matches the desired voltage at specified load and done.

Allot of amps don't come with this info, so you have to know what to look for in the amps output signal to do it or , get an O-scope or the SMD-1 unit. Its wickedly easy to use and can setup your amp perfect every time.

Whichever subs I end up going with, multiply RMS by OHM load, then take the square root of that number and set my voltage output on the amp to match said number. Good enough?

I'd suggest a better amp. I'll be surprised if you get more than 20 hours out of that one.

Also, what JL subs did you have in there?

There are a few 12" subs on the market that would make for an awesome setup behind the seats in our trucks with the right sealed box, and wouldn't need much power at all.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to end up putting a 15" kicker compd in it

Sorry, I forgot to respond yesterday.

I'd steer clear of that kicker. Those subs are very cheap in many aspects and are not notorious for getting loud OR sounding good at all.

There are three things that you can do to improve your bass response, and more specifically, volume, drastically.

    1. Build a custom box. That pre-made cookie cutter box is a soup sandwich and is not doing your subs any justice.

    2. Use a real amplifier. Whatever that amp is "rated" for, it's probably not putting that much wattage out. I've had customers buy those new Hifonics amps and have them blow up within weeks. Look into a quality name brand like JL.

    3. Upgrade your subs to 12". This is more of a suggestion geared toward gaining you some volume. I've heard setups with two W1's in out trucks off of 1000w that sounded damn good and got plenty loud. But if you REALLY want your system to bump, that 45% increase in cone area will work wonders.

Two 12" JL W1's on the JL JX1000/1D amp should do the trick for a reasonable price tag.
