I had an accident two years ago which ruined the very top vertebra where it joins the skull. If my airbag should activate, I could be paralysed for life. I am having trouble getting instructions on how to disable the steering wheel bag on my 2011 Tacoma x-cab.

Get the bottom of the seats wet, sensors are under there. Bingo, no more air bag deployment.

I'm sorry but how is it any different if you get into a wreck that sets off the front air bag and instead of an air bag you slam into the steering wheel?

I was "thinking" (LOL) an accidental airbag deployment.

I have a sneaky feeling that unplugging the two airbag connectors might also disable the horn. To me, driving mostly in rush-hour traffic, the horn is the most frequently used steering wheel control and an important safety item.

Wouldn't your seat belts keep you from hitting the steering wheel?

I always assume that one would be wearing their seat belt. It's just a common sense thing, like not poking yourself in the eye with a sharp stick.

As for the vertebra issue - the physics in a crash really stack the deck against humans. Our necks aren't designed to take the forces. That's why all cars now have headrests. They're not so you can rest your pretty head when you're tired, they are there to keep you from popping your neck when some drunk loser hits you a 50 mph while you're stopped at the red light. When you hit something while you're moving a seatbelt stops your body but does nothing for your head. I assume that's what the air bag is for. So wouldn't disabling the air bag actually be a worse situation than leaving it active?

In my 1911 Tacoma, after reading your reply, I re-installed the headrest I took out when it was new. On the driver side. The passenger headrest stays out. I have the extra cab with the suicide doors and the P-side headrest creates a huge blind spot when duking it out in traffic. I find this design flaw almost unbelievable, it is that bad, and I am hoping Toyota has done something about this in later models. Thanks much for your advice — you and the rest of you who responded.

I pulled the rear head rests (extracab too). For visibility I have Multivex mirrors. With those I can see extremely well. Merging and lane changes are a piece of cake. I don't have a blind spot. If it isn't in the mirror, I can see the fender directly or it isn't there.

Right. If it ain't in the mirros it ain't there! I also have something learned from a Brit friend from the service: I live on a dirt road and when I am too busy or broke to get the Tacoma washed, I go out there with an old towel and a spray bottle of 409 and get only what I can see from the driver seat. Looks great going down the road! No chicks at mailboxes on my route, so....
