Whistling Noise in Crosswinds At Highway Speed

I bought this stuff over the weekend and it arrived today.

I'm going to stick it up in the window seal just like I did the electrical tape, except along the whole seal, not just a few inches. It should fold around the window and create a nice seal.

 

GotMetal, that looks like a good product to place into the existing seal. I continue to monitor your post as i find them very helpful and believe your getting very close to solving this annoying sound.

Thanks man. I hope you're right. It should not only make a better seal but also secure it up in there better and not allow it to move side to side, which I think could be causing the noise.

This is what I think is happening. When the winds hit the passenger side, for example, the pressure inside wants to exit the drivers side. With the window closed, that pressure is pushing outwards on the window, moving it ever so slightly and creating a little gap to escape through, thus the noise. This would also explain why the noise is stopped by pushing on the window. You're resealing that gap against the rubber. I may be way off here, but it makes sense to me.

 

Im going to go browse the adhesive section at a couple hardware stores tomorrow. There was this clear/transparent rubbery tape I put along the front edge of my hood when i installed my weathertech bug shield. It protects the paint where it is in contact with the plastic deflector. It's almost like that clear stuff they try to sell you at the dealer for protecting the front of the car. I'm thinking about putting something like that along the top edge of my window. Out of sight when the window is up, as long as it's a narrow enough strip. I noticed today that I could hear air causing a sound from that location on the window while just driving around town today. Not the full blown whistle, but a definite sound of turbulent air. If I pushed out on the top of the window the sound would stop, but it gradually came back after about a minute. My other windows are silent.

You just run screen spline along the upper weather stripping of the windshield. There is an opening that it fits perfectly into. Problem solved

 

I'm going to try the spline trick. The stuff I bought for the window seal did not work. On to the next.

Zack, do you know what thickness you used? When looking this stuff up it seems there are several sizes available. Thanks.

 

I was unable to find the clear plastic/rubber adhesive tape. but got metal's weather stripping gave me an idea. I found some open cell one-sided adhesive weather stripping that is really soft. lots of loft but compresses to near flat. I'm going to try it in the groove where the window sits up top. the collapsibility will allow the window to close within about 1/50 of an inch of normal and the loft should fill in any gap. just need to get out on the open road with a stiff breeze.

That's the noise I have as well. A few of us have been trying different things, to no avail. My next attempt is motozack's screen spline trick, which I have done but not tested in any winds yet. He said it worked for him, so we'll see. Also waiting for harpolith's update.

 

Today I reached across and pulled on the passenger door as it was making the noise and it seemed to quiet down. The hardest part seems to be figuring out exactly where the noise is coming from. I've already been planning on putting a windshield in it anyway. So maybe that will help rule out that.

 

For me, and some others here, it seems to be in the upper window area where the top starts to slope down. We can push on the window from the inside in this general location and make the noise stop. What it causing it is the more troubling part for me.

 

Pretty sure I've found the problem I'm experiencing. Might be able to help some of you guys.. The factory windshield was installed ever so slightly crooked. So the gap between moulding and A pillar on the driver side is much smaller than the gap on the passenger side.. Which is allowing air to force the moulding to flip backwards while driving into a strong wind.. Which causes the sound of letting air out of a balloon. I'm having a buddy back fill the moulding with urethane today to see if that helps keep the moulding in place.

 

No noise today after throwing a bunch of urethane behind the windshield moulding.. Hoping it stays that way!

 

That's great! My windshield is not as you describe. Not crooked. Looks pretty even all the way around. The screen spline I tried did not work. Not surprised though. I didn't really think it would.

 

Have you tried using an air compressor and blowing air into the windshield mouldings? That's what lead me to realize what was going on.. by crooked I'm talking like 1/16 of an inch off.. Super small amount. But just enough to let the moulding lip fold along the a pillar and allow air in.. Kind of hard to explain

 

I know what you mean. Yes I have tried compressed air all over the windows, side mirrors and windshield. The only ones I could find noise in was the mirrors and windows, nothing in the windshield.

 

I have a 2015 Tacoma Dbl Cab and have same howling noise that sounds like it is from driver's mirror at high speed with crosswind. If I fold the mirror it stops. I put Weathertech side window deflectors on and it greatly reduced the frequency and volume of the sound. Still not happy though. Want it totally gone.

 

Sub'd. 2 week old Tacoma DCLB and with cross wind or higher speed it is driving me insane.

 

Mines definitely doing it from the top of the windshield. I was going about 80mph when I just started to hear it so I started pushing on the upper part of the windshield and it would change as I pushed on it. Sometimes I could make it do it by pushing on it. So I'm thinking some good sealer around the windshield should do it for me. When you say back fill what do you mean? I'm thinking of just running a bead around the seal? I did a video and will try to post it later.
