I think his point is approach angle when on the front. With a winch cradle, it sticks off the front of the truck 12"ish. Kind of sucks when approaching a step incline or bouncing around in rock gardens. Either way, any winch is better than no winch when it comes time to needing one.

If you have a winch bumper with a winch inside the bumper the option for self recovery is always there.

If I was to need to winch my self out, i wouldn't have to worry about trying to add an additional 10"+ to the front of my truck to get my winch on. It's already integrated into the bumper therefore my approach angle will be substantially greater than if I had the same bumper with a winch in a receiver hitch. But if you don't offroad then having a receiver hitch with a winch would be good for you....

Some of us aren't the hardcore offroaders like the Moab crew, I like to go explore, and winch recovery is helpful when needed.
I get the approach angle, but, if the situation is that bad, I'll have friends around to help, I mean it's stupid to get yourself in a situation you can't get out of.
For us "light duty" offroaders, the option of having a front or rear winch, or remove it to save weight, is a good option.
Not to mention the ability to use it as a rec hitch for moving trailers, mounting carry racks, bike racks, etc... is a good option!
Highlift jacks and shovels have helped me out more than a winch, just depends on what kind of offroading you choose to do!

I concur. A winch basket is all I will ever need to get me out of where ever I will try to go. I am not as brave as most. Work to hard to pay for my stuff that I could potentially destroy.

Right, I don't offroad as much as I'd like to but for me having my winch on always is an ease of mind. We have a guy in our group that wheels his first gen with a front receiver winch and there were times that he just plowed trough the clay due to how low it was. It's a great idea and save you weight to not have it on your truck and in the elements all the time.

Just saying, the rec hitch option is a trade off, you get options, but you lose some too...

If I had a winch mount of the front it would have greatly helped me out in this situation......

2 weeks after I bought my truck (brand new) I slid about 30' down into a ravine about 8 miles up a mountain by my self with no cell service. Ever since the. Having a winch always on my truck was a must.
