So, I've been told this is not a good brand..... (let me know if this is totally the wrong catagory)

I looked up some reviews for this product and no reviews to be found really...

What is your reviews? I was thinking of getting a bigger lift off.. I forget what it's called, hell something steel? Hell on Steel? I liked their products and their prices.

    What say you?

I don't have a whole lot of tools let alone a garage. But I can always have my dad help me. How difficult is it to change these out?

The spacer lift or new shocks?

Spacer lift you just unbolt a few things, take the old one off and slap the new one on top of the top plate and bolt it back up.
Shocks you'll need to have a spring compressor to put the old coils on the new shocks unless you buy new shocks/coils preassembled and then you just have to slap them on.

Lots of helpful threads/posts on how to do this! I even think there's a youtube video around a way you don't need a spring compressor.

I am not planning on doing any hardcore off roading, we do have some nice trails up here. but where I go fishing it would be nice to drive out a little farther. lol that and when we get a big snow it's nice to be above the snow. lol

Mostly just a day time vehicle, but it will be nice to haul my (future) snowmachine (or my dad's sled. ;) ) lol

    Hey Red
Do a search: "Lifting Your Truck! Things You Need To Know" Read that first and you'll be able to make an informed decision. Lots of people use Bilstein 5100s with better results than that spacer lift. If you go with the 5100s, there are youtube vids on how to install at home without using a spring compressor. Basic tools, pretty easy. Time invested doing LOTS of research on this forum has paid huge dividends for me. Go for it!

OP - What you have on your rig right now is basically a 3" lift. 3" is the highest you can go, unless you decide to do a 4-6" Drop-Bracket type lift.

If you want to stay at the 2.5-3" range, then I would skip any of those spacers, and go with a good shock/coil combo for better ride and performance.

What you have now is a spacer lift. The Hellbent spacers are the same poop, but a different pile.

I had a spacer lift too and regretted cheaping out at first. Saved up and bought Icons and UCA's. I'm not saying that you should go to that extreme, but spacers seem to be just plain crap that induce a real lousy driving experience.

Like others here have said (and YotaDan), simply save a little more moolah and go with new shocks/coils and AAL for a decent riding lift. You won't have any regrets.

Oh yeah, and use the search tool here for all you need to know.

    Akgrownredhead,
I would be happy to answer any questions you have regarding our Bilstein kit should you be interested in it, feel free to call or e-mail me. Also we do offer our strut assembly for $90 which makes the install a bit easier and provides you with all new hardware. With your dads assistance you should be able to tackle the install without paying a shop to it, which can be costly.

There is a tremendous amount of information on here and several great vendors to choose from, so DO take the time and do your research to find the kit that fits your needs best.

I did the toytec 3" lift with adjustable bilstein 5100's. Kit was 650 and my dad and I who had no experience put everything in in one day with a floor jack, jack stands and wrenches. Rides smoother than stock and can take a hit. Don't go cheap with spacers. You'll end up buying a real kit anyways

How come a spacer lift is not good? I am with Revtek Suspension, but would be happy to help you understand. Bilstein 5100 series adjustable from shocks keep getting mentioned. Bilstein makes great shocks, but their adjustable front 5100 series achieves a lift the same way the Revtek spacer does. Revtek spacers absorb some room on top of the coil. Bilstein adjustable shocks absorb room on the bottom of the coil. Both methods are preloading the spring and using the same method to lift the front of the truck. They both utilize the factory spring and there for will have the same spring rate and same ride qualities.

Also most Toyota dealers install the Revtek kit into brand new trucks because it does not void the warranty nor does it put excessive stress on the truck.

    Revtek,
Typically most on here are referring to the top plate spacers (more the thicker ones), which simply move the entire assembled strut down. Even these can be a decent affordable option for lifting providing enough research went into understanding the impact on the suspension post install (strain on factory parts due to over extension whiled drooped and or collapse length of shocks becoming an issue).

In this particular case the spacer pictured goes under the Top Hat and therefore, as you mentioned already, simply preloads the coil much like an adjustable shock would. Unfortunately some folks are not really familiar with either spacer and will just say whatever another member told them who is also unfamiliar. This misinformation happens quite often it can hurt the reputation of a company, but this happens with everything really.

Rather than chime into a thread that's pretty harmless perhaps it would be best to "clear the air" by starting your own thread introducing yourself as Revtek and discussing your product. Should folks have technical questions you could provide them with accurate answers.

    Just a thought

    Oh and welcome to TW

I would love to do an educational thread. How would I go about doing it and how would I get it known for people to refer to?

    Too many to list now.
I don't know if its the cold up here but our shop tries to steer people clear of the 5100's. Havent had problems with any other bilstein but those we see at least a 20% failure rate. Just something to note since you live in AK. Best lift for the money is OME in my opinion. We've installed dozens this year already. Beyond that you get into higher end stuff like King or Fox or Icon.

Click on the "Forum" tab at the top, under "Tacoma Discussion" maybe start a new thread under the "New Members" page. This will be a good place to at least say Hi and introduce yourself. From there you could maybe find a better discussion to talk about the technical stuff. You might want to ask one of the mods where the best place is to list product info.
