Hi, I want to add my two cents on the frame replacement from Toyota. I have a 2006 Tacoma with 67500 miles, that Toyota inspected on May 5th, and told me I needed a frame replacement. They rented me a Chevy Cruze from Enterprise. After a couple of days, I told them this wasn't going to cut it, and that I needed a truck. They gave me a brand new Ford F-150 4x4 4-door. Wow, nice truck. I ended up driving it for approximately 7 weeks while I waited for a frame. The frame finally came in, and my truck was disassembled 5 days ago. I had bought a set of Bilstein adjustable front shocks awhile ago, and they let me take the shocks to my mechanic to have the springs put on. It cost me $20 compared to $300 from Toyota. I set the adjustment on my new shocks up one notch (.85"), to make the truck sit more level. I'm happy with choosing that rather that the next setting (1.75"). I let them replace the spark plugs ($150) water pump ($253) and power steering hose ($125). I declined replacing a throw out bearing ($425) and a wheel bearing ($608). They didn't break anything, or try to pull any fast ones, and my truck didn't need anything else. I will say that when they test drove it, they felt a pulsation in the front brakes. Seems that was caused by it setting too long. They turned down my rotors for free to take care of the pulsation. I am so far happy with the whole deal I got from Toyota of Greensburg in PA. They let me take as many pictures as I wanted, and treated me well. I feel pretty fortunate to have a new frame on my truck. If anyone has any questions about my scenario feel free to ask.

Seven weeks? You must live a charmed life, mine took just shy of five months. But it was well worth the wait, good on Toyota.

Ok, Just about 5 months later the Truck is done. Dealership did a great job to...threw in a few freebies such as battery, oil change, and a bunch of parts. I paid for the 100K checkup...since the truck was due for it. Truck runs and drives like new...

Everything except the tar is a great idea, don't put that on your truck. Tar will separate from the frame, salt/debris will get behind it and make matters worse. Drip less oil undercoating is the way to go.

So guys I've been reading and re reading all these posts on frame rust. For the life of me I cant figure WHEN and if Toyota has done anything new to the newer model Tacoma's. What year is a safe model to get to not have to worry about the frame rusting out, and does anybody know what year they started doing things differently. I cant imagine Toyota is STILL installing the same frames as the ones the had problems with. Thanks in advance guys

Nobody knows....... there are lots of speculations of 'why' and 'what' actually happened and lots of assumptions. But nobody truly knows at what point did they change the frame production process to fix it.

Aside from that, we don't know what they did to fix it - AND - did that actually fix the problem? You won't truly know for 10 years how the frames hold up.

This is what makes me wary about getting a new truck. However if I do, I plan to have my body shop do the whole undercarriage, & frame, in & out with "ChassisSaver" Clear, about 3-4 coats, & then do "Fluid Film" every Fall thereafter. That with keeping it clean & plugging any non-drain holes should keep the rust at bay, hopefully.

Interesting reads on the frame rust... I had the inspection last week and it failed. The dealer estimated 6 months to get the frame. I was wow-ed when I saw the extend of the parts replaced. I have some pages of this thread to read, but I appreciated the comments I've seen up to now and will continue to watch for recommendations as I wait for the frame.
My truck was purchased in Northern Virginia and lived there for 7 years. I moved it to Florida last fall and the inspection was done at an Orlando dealership.

7 years, that's not very long. I think the metal that was used must not be very good either. Will "ChassisSaver" Clear, about 3-4 coats, & then "Fluid Film" every Fall thereafter be enough on a new one? I have to wonder.

I will get my 2007 4dr 4X4 w/139K back next week from dealer in PA. I had to wait seven months to get the frame. So hold on to something before you get the replacement. Rear springs will come later, too!

I asked they do not put the new ones on until a answer comes from the recall for the springs, I had already placed an additional spring when I lived in Alaska.

I got my truck back last Friday. I had the dealer install the ome suspension lift from toytec. When I got it back, it made clunking noises when I turned wheel and went in reverse. Then made similar noises when I would start to move forward. I brought back yesterday and the tech heard everything I heard. They had it all day yesterday, lubed all the ball joints in uca's and re attached the front bumper, removed and re installed all body parts on front end. No more noise and feels 100% better. Also made them wash and vacuum my rig, since they did a crap job when I first got back. Good luck to all having it done!

    None....... so far.
Has anyone actually had Toyota deny them a frame replacement because of mileage? Mine failed the recall yesterday and I have 182K miles on my '06. I was also told tat after they order a frame, it would be 3 to 4 months before it gets replaced.

There is no mileage limit. My truck has 396,000 km, or just under 250,000 miles on it.

    Outstanding.
I'd love to get another couple of years out of it. I also have the broken leaf springs and they are going to replace those at the same time.
