I have an 01 Taco Ext Cab, 2.7l Manual Trans. It was configured from the factory with 15' wheels. I changed them to 265/70R16 and of course my speedometer is off by 5-7MPH. I found a place to buy a speedometer drive gear that is supposed to calibrate the speedo to be correct, at least close to correct. Does anyone know a resource to find the procedure to change the drive gear? I am not afraid to try it but I have no clue where to start other than the transfer case. It looks like a lot of options to try but I would rather not tear into something that I don't need to due to my own ignorance.

good luck, I have seen a post or two make it sound like a straight forward thing to swap out but I think those were talking about swapping the whole gear assembly from another truck.

It's pretty easy to change the gear. You will have to tap the spindle out of the gear with a punch, then tap the new gear onto the spindle. The rest of the procedure is super straightforward.

Thanks. I hope it is easy but who knows. I may become a transfer case expert before it is over!

it's easy. On the side of the transfer case back toward the rear, there will be a wire going to a cylindrical thing. Unplug the wire. Remove the 10mm (I think) bolt that holds a small bracket that holds the speedo assembly in. Then just wiggle the speedo assembly out.

The spindle is held into the assembly with a little clip that is easy to pull off with needle nose pliers. Then pull the spindle out.

Brace the spindle between two 2x4s (or in a vise if you have one). Tap the center of the other side of the speedo gear with a punch and hammer. You will probably have to increase the size of the hole in the gear, but it's no big deal and won't hurt anything. When you get the spindle out of the gear, tap the new gear onto the spindle.

Assembly is the reverse of disassembly.

I contacted the place I ordered from and was informed that I ordered the wrong part. I had ordered some gear that goes inside the transfer case. What I needed was a speed sensor gear. He had me pull my existing gear to see what was OEM and then he determined the correct gear. It looks like the assembly contains the gear, shaft and clip and it was $8 cheaper. Thank goodness for honest vendors. I can recommend www.toyotapartsoverstock.com. They seem legit. I did easily remove the speed sensor assembly and return it. Looks like an easy, inexpensive speedometer fix

    Resurrection! Thanks search feature!

So I got the FSM and also need to do the drive gear change out. Have my 33T gear. Before I drive into this, the FSM says to change out a gasket that's in the drive gear. Is this necessary? Is it even helpful? I have a 1997.

Thanks! That was excellent. Done! Now, should I replace those two tablespoons of gear oil? I'm planning on driving about 1k miles in the next two days, but I'm also planning on changing all my gear oil soon.

    Little different on my 1997:

There was a little metal tab and only one bolt holding the cable drive assembly in.

Now to go for a test drive!

Anyone have any ideas? I took the cable off the assembly and can feel the notch where the cable lines up to the drive assembly and the great doesn't appear to be turning. Unless I do in the same place every time. It took much more force getting it back in whereas it just slid out by hand.

Those Dakota Digital Speedometer calibration things only work with digital VSS’s, right?

Well, this is what I get for being distracted when doing car work. Forgot to compare parts. The new gear was significantly shorter than the old gear. And then, on top of that, it puts it in the wrong location so the drivetrain destroyed the speedo gear. Going to have to find one the correct length! At least it wasn't the cable...

Also, so the one that's in there is 30T, and I'm right about 10% off. Would 33T be correct or should I go with 32T? I figure with 33, it starts decreasing the amount of correction per additional tooth each tooth size you go up since it's adding a shrinking ratio to the diameter of the gear.
