Get a jump on reading the Owners Manual.

Click on -> Owners -> Resources -> Manuals & Warranty - info here as well for maintenance frequency(how often and what to use).

    You'll need to setup a userid/password

Thanks for the online owners manual, a lot of good info! I'm waiting on a call back to see if it's too late to factory install the quick shift along with a roof rack since it's still being built.

I'm am leasing right now and will most likely buy it out at the end, (I'm 24 and this was the cheapest route to get me in the truck now bc I couldn't afford to finance it now but in a few years it won't be a problem.) because I am leasing it, all the scheduled maintenance should be covered by the dealer right?

I've never leased a vehicle. I suspect someone with more knowledge of this will chime in soon.

That you desperately will need a TRD short shifter kit lol. And id change the oil with genuine toyota engine oil at around 500 miles, you can pick up a case of 12 (good for 2 oil changes) for about $40 and use a factory toyota oil filter or use a TRD oil filter, both are good. I also highly suggest getting a TRD catback... Louder exhausts always makes the drive of a stick shift vehicle far more enjoyable :)

Yeah it's funny bc a stock Tacoma is SUPER quiet coming from my straight piped Mazda. I'm used to being able to hear the engine and knowing the exact shift points for how I want to drive (economically or spirited lol) when I test drove one it was weird bc you don't hear anything until you really push the motor around 4k and it sounded like the motor didn't like to be up that high. Definitely something to get used to bc I don't plan on doing an exhaust early on but hey yeah never know... Any other bolt on exhausts that you guys like other than the trd? Any sound clips?

The reason it looks nasty is the molybdenum disulfide used in the assembly and initial fill. It looks awful but actually protects the diff. 5K change is overkill.

Makes sense^^ I couldn't imagine Toyota would make a part that NEEDS to be changed at such a quick interval.

I've been hearing a chirping since I picked up my 2011 speed about 10 months ago. 25K miles later I still hear a chirping sound but i have no problems shifting whatsoever.. Is the chirping sound a throw out bearing issue?

If you saw the metal shavings in the oil in the sun like i did, you wouldnt think changing at 5k was a smart idea.

Too late I was going to warn you about the 6pd whiners. I'm not even sure what the "short" first gear is all about either it will do 35 in first and is great for getting a load moving.

Where do you think the metal was? Well in was on the bottom, well they don't have a pump so that is just where it's going to stay metal in new gears is normal it's called flashing.

exactly, there is a breaking period where the gears mesh together properly and create metal flakes.... that shit does NOT sit on the bottom, it gets moved around and dispersed throughout the axle.

For 30 bucks to change to synthetic diff fluid at 5k miles, its well worth it IMO..... you didnt just have to replace ring, pinion, and all bearings in a rear axle of a 4runner due to it haveing old fluid that ate everything alive.... 30 bucks up front at 5k would have saved the 800 bucks in parts n labor down the line.

The way I see break in is follow the manual I think those engineers know something about these trucks.... and these engines are not new so the manuals seems pretty viable IMO

Thanks for the info guys! I do agree with the $30 for peace of mind comment but at the same time I gotta agree that Toyota knows these trucks and like was previously mentioned. This engine/tranny combo isn't new so it's been tested for a number of years. I guess I'll see what I decide when the time comes. She is gonna be my baby though so I'm leaning towards the $30 for peace of mind route haha.

What's the deal with the engine oil changes? I looked it up quick and it looked a little more of a process then just pull drain bolt, let drain, unscrew filter. New filter, reinstall drain bolt, new oil.
