I want to see what air filters everyone really uses. It seems to be split between K&N and AFE so I want to settle this.

I just change the damn things regularly. In the last 20 years, i have had all my Toyota go well past the 200k mile mark. Air filters are not something that is going to gain me much by spending extra money.

My last Tacoma went 300k before the frame rusted in half. hi dollar air filters would not have prevented that from happening.

I voted K&N because I'm running their filter in the stock air box. But I am considering going back to just the stock Toyota paper filter.

I would go with an AEM dry fly air filter. I wouldn't go K&N since you have to oil it.

What about with a deckplate mod? What would be best?

With the plate mod, you will have a chance to bring in more dirty air. No matter what filter you use, you are going to need to change the filter more often. It's not going to matter what filter you use. Me? IM going to use whatever is the cheapest.

^This^ It really doesn't matter what filter you use with the deckplate mod, it will just get dirty faster. I have run the K&N and a stock paper filter with the deckplate mod. No difference in performance... The only thing that mod does is make the truck louder.

I ran the K&N for awhile right after I bought my truck back in 04...complete waste of money. No performance gain whatsoever, and the oil gets sucked in and screws up your MAS. I'm currently running a stock filter, and have been for the last 50K.

To those who use an AFE Pro Dry S, how does it compare to using basic, replaceable filters? Not so much performance-wise, since I doubt there is any difference, but talking cost. Will it end up paying for itself/saving money? And if so, how long does it take? When I finally get a Taco, if I am to switch to one, I figured it would be best to get one right away, to maximize the cost benefit. I want to make sure beforehand, though.

In a normal DD situation I change my stock paper filter every 30k for about $7 you do the math.

That's about what I figured. My last car was about the same, hence why I never got a cleanable filter. It never seemed worth it, but I like the concept of not throwing things away. My asking was mostly just curiosity/hopefulness.

I use Wix filters purchased at my local NAPA. I don't want to risk any oils from a oiled air filter getting on and clogging my MAF.

If the oil filter dissection wasn't enough for you guys, I'd guess the stock stuff is likely superior at filtering in this instance as well. Stick with stock.

No difference in performance between the K&N and the stock or the deckplate mod itself?

As for me, I stuck with OEM air filter, I ran the K&N and didn't care for it. Never tried AEM but don't think I'll bother.

I utilize an K&N fipk as my primary intake
but I also have the factory air box with deck plate mod.
Occasionally I will run the later if I know I'll be splashing some on wetter trails.

If I run the AB/dp closed... the stock fuzzy filter generally stays cleaner/longer.
Tarmac duty would likely see it staying cleaner and for even longer periods.
But when utilizing my AB deck plate mod (open)... the stock fuzzy gets dirtier and quicker.
Especially when off road and in dusty environments.
I've even had the pc throw a code when the element has become clogged.
and so I would suggest a filter that can be washed/cleaned if using the DP/FAB.
^ that or carry a spare element when off road and in a dusty environment.

Realize that most users of the K&N not only over oil it...
but likely clean it excessively and more then it should be.
The K&N filter elements work best if left somewhat dirty.
The encrusted dirt stuck to the oil on the gauze
    actually assists with finer filtration.

I would not advise using a K&N drop in element...
unless one understands/follows the oiling/cleaning procedures.
Even then... it's pleat holes are larger then that of the fipk's conical element.
And... there are less holes per square inch on the drop in element.
So I wouldn't use the K&N drop in element 'cept maybe for street duty.

Realize that the K&N drop in element
    is nowhere close in performance/protection
when compared to the conical element of the fipk's system.

^ even then... a pre-filter over the fipk's conical element is smart
if wheeling off road in severely dusty conditions.

I'm too cheap to pay for K&N's pre-filter...
So I simply cut the foot off an old pair of nylon stockings
and cover the fipk's element with that.
Yep... I oil the nylon pre-filter too.
    When it gets excessively dirty...
I just take it off, shake it out, re-oil it, reinstall it
and it's ready for another round.
