I'd be interested in the final total cost to get this kit, put it on the truck, and get it running properly. I'd be very intrested of it's still less than the initial cost of the URD supercharger kit. Thanks for taking one for the team and getting one OP

Yes, absolutely my thanks as well. You always need someone to give a first hand report on any new product like this.
I do think this could be a great mod, but I always err on the side of caution. The things I ask aren't attacks on the product, just things that everyone should be asking. This isn't a bedcover or skidplate, but something which can have serious consequences if it doesn't perform right. I want to make sure the OP has the right knowledge going into the project so it has the best chance of success.

I'm 2wd. I was being a bit vague. I picked up a turbonetics brand turbo a few months back to trade out my ebay turbo. I'll be pulling my kit off every few years unless I can register the truck out of state. Turbo installs are pretty pnp if all the parts are bolt on. Tuning you have a few options. Self-tune or go to a recommended shop by the tuner that you get. You can follow car forums for the tuning ideas. Low boost is pretty easy to self tune compared to something more aggressive.

Throw that fuel pump in first before the turbo. I'm really curious if the 2tr is as friendly to boost as a 2rz or 3rz. It does seem like it since URD got 250hp out of their supercharger kit.

A good rough estimate would be throw another 1k to 1.5k in hardware to make 8-9psi. More if you need to pay someone to tune. It really depends on the direction you want to go with a turbo kit. A whole lot of options.

I am hoping to find someone to do the tune and do it right first time, I don't have time or interest in learning about engine maps and making it not too lean or too rich. I thought in order to tune, they first need to break the engine map code so they can change the parameters of the ECU. I don't know how popular Tacoma tuning is...that's why I wasn't sure if there exist such a tune...especially the 2.7L engines. Wish URD FI systems were a lot less... so these turbo kits seems reasonable... The only issue is this turbo setup completely vetted to be reliable and stable.

Pretty cool desert truck you got for 2WD.

Sorry @SUMMIT556 for clogging up your GB, but hope this is pretty relevant to what a turbo kit really means for a toyota.

@imom Thanks the truck does the job for a 2wd. If it was 4x4, my friends wouldn't be able to post all my stuck in sand photos on IG. with a toyota you have to throw out the idea of flashing ecu's like what you can do to domestics and tuner cars. That is why you don't see a large following for tuning this platform. toyota has their ecu's encrypted so well that there is no tuning support or at least not worth the work to crack open to be profitable. Someone will say what about the FRS... well that is a subaru motor and ecu. Only option you have is a piggyback and standalone ecu. Piggyback is the most popular for stock block budget tuning which I have and it a universal tuner. The 2tr should tune the same with maybe a few new bugs to work past due to more updated ecu design. Of course this system could be made to be bolt on, safe and make a good 100hp over stock. Puts a smile on your face everytime. I love to work with someone with a 2tr and get some solid data logs posted about this kit. ozboost was love it if what I found this kit to be "safe" and give people factual data that this turbo can be used. There is always a case where a motor will blow up. Mostly due to the owner having neglect. If you want a turbo on a NA vehicle you are already wanting to flirt with danger to begin with. I talked to a few guys that came up to me and asked about doing a turbo on their 2tr truck. Still haven't been able to convince them to walk through the development steps. They get a bit scared when I have the whole plan already mapped out carefully rather than just slapping on a kit without the numbers. Might have to wait until this platform is older even though its been out since 05. So anyone in the socal area want to turbo their 2tr for research???

For now this is my daily driver... I had two tacos before and then I moved to Z4M and BRZ... so wouldn't mind some more speed as I had with Z4M and handling with both cars on this Taco... maybe it's crazy thinking...but I got xbrace for my Reg cab that I need to install and then see. Not many cars excite me these days so I went back to functional with a truck for the time being. I don't mind a mild FI on NA engine especially the Tacos...my first 1 gen taco went 176K before selling to family and it's still going. I know the engine should be good...the current tranny I'm not impressed with.

You're further south than I am...if you are are an experience tuner/turbo guy.... the distance and risk is a big barrier to overcome, but an extra 100HP really helps move 3300lbs. It'll be about what with my first Z4 before I got the M... it's enough for all around fun daily driver. Can't really do much with 400HP cars on the street and be responsible... so 250HP is good enough for slightly bigger tires and more pick up which this truck needs badly.

Don't knock the 2WD...takes more skill I think...what do I know though...I'm not an off roader... still your truck is pretty cool...I think there's a 2WD baja class...I always thought 2WD are more like smuggle trucks...build for speed and fast dirt roads than claiming over rocks.

Sorry for the side track... really looking forward to the turbo kit news.

True but I've seen Garrett T3/T4 turbos for under $800 brand new. All the ball bearing turbos are over grand though.

It's under 2 grand and takes half a day to install? I wish my truck wasn't a lease. Lol.

There's no way anyone, other than a very proficient mechanic with a shop full of tools and spare parts, is installing a complete turbo system inside of one day. I can fight with a single rounded nut for HOURS. I have witnesses. :frusty:

I couldn't get the kit. I'm moving down to cali so the kit just wasn't a smart idea right now

Get the header and down pipe. Upgrade to a Garrett equivalent turbo. Journal or ball bearing. Bolt it on. Monitor your IAT's. If you notice they continually run too hot, then upgrade to an intercooler.

5 psi is nothing stressful. Internally wastegated makes things super simple and easy to package.

I'd get it and upgrade over time, for that price. I think it is a good starter kit.

Do it man. Good starter kit. Get a mapecu-3 for tuning. I'm sure gadget would probably sell u the intercooler and piping to the intake manifold for a bolt on fit for the charge side. Need more turbo tacos on island

Would this be possible without any tuning? At a low boost like 5psi, would the oem equipment be able to recognize the increased air and supply enough extra fuel?

I'm very interested in the idea of a low boost turbo system to add some power. Those long gradual hills are tough on the highway. How much do you think 5 psi would affect reliability? I'd love my 2tr to go 200000+ miles.

I remember finding this a long time ago when I still had a 22re powered pickup. Super cool manifold build.

    http://www.sdsefi.com/techheader.htm

I'm thinking the ecu is the key to a reliable turbo system, and possibly the most expensive part. URD makes at least one universal ecu I think, but it's around $700. Then money to have it tuned by someone who knows what they're doing.

Also I know the 2tr had relatively high compression, correct me if I'm wrong but isn't it like 10.1:1 or so? So boost is surely limited if reliability is desired. On the plus side I seem to recall the crank and con rods are forged and pistons hypereutectic. For my daily driver I probably wouldn't go above 5psi. But if I knew it could be making 50-70 extra hp and still have a bullet proof reliable engine, I'd start buying parts in the very near future.
