You can't get a manual double cab with the long box in the states either. Hopefully toyota corrects this situation

If thats really new engine, I would like to be first one to congratulate Toyota eng team on yet another fail...
Putting oil cooler coolant lines at the bottom of the engine is the dumbest idea ever. They already rusting on 3UR engines and those are tacked more to the side.
here you have them in front of engine as what ? Salt overspray catchers?
Oh and BTW when they stick like that, they like to get punctured by various low flying objects.
Oi vei - you would thing putting that crap on 3UR was dumb, making it worse is just flat out crazy.
    Kids don't do drugs.

Sounds like you should apply for a job with Toyota, you seem to have such knowledge of their products, you'd be a real asset to their team!

I am not in car designing business. Plus, I would not fit well in their team. I don't work well with Liberal Art grads with out common sense.
It's not complicated, low lines get over spray, and they rust. All they should do is take couple of their trucks on the lift and check bythemselves. Why you think lower idler in 1gr is first one to die?

Thinking Liberal Arts grads design engines

If the lines are well protected by a skid plate it will be fine.

Yes that worked so well for frames. .....Are we doing the same thing again ...
I posted this in Dec 2010
Two years later Toyota included plastic covers for frame holes... with their truck..... It was too late for many, their frames in those locations look like swiss cheese.
It was common sense, Toyota eng should have seen this when they designed frame in 2004.
    Same thing now...
Give some time... Toyota will catch up...

BlueT thinks he is the one that got a vacation, when really it was us :p.

In all seriousness I doubt the layout of the engine from those basic schematics has any significant flaws. Toyota has been building engines for a long time with no problems. BTW it was Dana that fudged up the frames, both on the first and second gens. The new 2016 frames have a different composition.

Meh so they build the frames, bunch of fanboys here claimed there is no problem with 2 gen frames, Toyota is now replacing all 2005-2008 frames.
    been there done that.
    Give some time... :D

Toyota has succesfully sued Dana corporation for those years of frames that BlueT is complaining about. Its common knowledge, at least for most people who are members here. They have addressed the issue and have made improvements on the 3rd gen frame. Regarding strength with the high strength steel and as a byproduct the high strength steel is also more rust proof. Also Toyota isn't the only manufacturer who has had rust problems on their frames.
I trust Toyota just a bit more then I trust BlueT.

The most important engineering decision to balance when designing an engine is rust mitigation. That's why so many blocks and heads out of aluminum now. Think about it. Those idiots at Toyota should have put the oil cooler on the exhaust manifold. There's plenty of room there, and the heat will evaporate any water immediately so it can't rust. It's the perfect solution. They ought to hire me to design their engines. Id also put the oil pan on the top of the engine so it can't get smashed on rocks.

It's becoming more certain that it isn't the 7gr. For one, that engine code never got a suffix. Second, that 7GR is from a tentative document first released in April. And most importantly the parts catalog available to the dealers this week was just updated and shows the engine as the 2GR-FKS.

I tried finding out what the FKS suffix means. F supposedly means its an economy DOHC, as opposed to performance tuned. K is a mystery, I read somewhere that it means maximum fuel economy. That seems consistent. And S seems like it used to mean swirl intake, but this is direct/port injected so that doesn't really make sense. Maybe they changed the meaning of S to be mode switching. Because the 8AR-FTS is a turbo, hence the T, and it's also an atkinson/otto and it ends in S.. yeah who cares.

The liberal arts majors are all teaching elementary school, not designing Toyota engines.

I dont know how Toyota sued Dana and Won too. Clearly it has to be something wrong with Toyota process not Dana proces. (its Toyota's powder painting process if you ask me)

Here are links to 4runner frame rot. Look at the latest one, Toyota is about to open recall on 4th gen 4runners and those frames never were made by Dana because 4runner is made in Japan (top to bottom)

Aren't a lot of those lines/fittings made out of aluminum? You know, that element on the periodic table that doesn't rust because it doesn't contain iron?

Also, glad to see the timing CHAIN stuck around instead of having a belt. :D

I think the rust issues another reason of many that Toyota did not do a clean sheet redesign for the Tacoma. They can churn out frames now for recall AND the gen 3.

Are we going to start posting every vehicle that has rust issues? It will be a never ending conversation.
