    I've had full exposed heimed steering on my truck for the better parts of 4 years now, heims are still good. no boots over them. Been through 2 racks in that time too

    Fair enough. But I did quote him specifically with his truck, not exactly a generic blanket statements. However....with qualifications.

    You're truck is a first gen desert truck with tube or solid stock tie rod. Which means you have basically just a dusty environment paired with a tube tie rod, which the right diameter boot can easily make a nice tight seal on.

    He has a second gen daily driver with stock components and lives in the bay area. Which means salt, rain, mud, grime and shit. Paired with factory outer TRE...which are far from large diameter and would be challenging to get a tight boot seal. My point is if shit gets inside the boot, it will deteriorate the heim faster. IMO, the boot is more important for the rack seals, not the heim.

    Nope, but I'm obviously clueless or wrong since you had to correct me so no point in me telling our first hand experience... Heims will fail if you get them dirty, never run them!

    Huh? What did I correct you on? I confirmed your setup, not corrected. Tube tie rod, tight seal, shit stays out of the boot. Not exactly apples to apples with the guy that was asking.

    Christ, take a menopause pill. You're clearly misinterpreting what I'm saying. I never said heims fail if you get them dirty. They are designed to be in the elements. How many links do you see with boots on the heims? My point is when shit gets trapped in the boot.....there's nowhere for it to go. The elements (be it dirt/water/mud/etc) just roll around inside the boot and deteriorate the heim faster than if it was just exposed and the shit runs off. You mitigate that problem with your boot seal. I'm not telling you lack experience or clueless or anything of the sort.

    Alright. Well, here's another for the long time LT'ers and general dudes who run their stuff pretty hard.

    What are you guys doing to secure your headlights with broken tabs? My tabs are broken on the lower mounting portion of the headlight housings and I can't figure out a way to keep them from moving around down there. Being that I wheel hard enough to break them off their bolt on locations at the bottom, new housings will just suffer the same fate.

    yes, and build an engine cage while youre at it. The factory front end moves around way to much, any really heavy wheeling is going to start breaking clips. Mine have been destroyed for years

    Mine have as well but its become a bit more amplified since I got the baja fenders since the tolerances are looser then stock. I'm talking to Anthony at DTF and I'm gonna have him make me a shock tower brace, I'm gonna see how much more he would charge me to build the radiator core support tubed and tie it into the shock tower cage bolt on style. That would be the most ideal thing to do it aounds like at this point, because I know these frames are flexy unless the body is a bit more solidly built.

    So when you box the frame are you boxing around the factory carrier bearing and gas tank cross members? Or cutting them out and rewelding them in? It looks like dmz boxes around them but hard to tell in pics

    I think some people box around them, I saw dmz's box in kit when I stopped by the shop and its in sections so you can go around the stock cross member from what I remember. Mine was cut out and a new boxed in cross member was built where the spare tire/cross member is. I think thats what I've mainly seen, pics on my build thread
