Yeah, sorry what I meant to say is you are looking for something more capable with a larger payload and tow rating but for less money than what the 3rd gen is going to go for. My bad.

You need to find a 2nd generation truck cheap at the wreckers that just has a bad motor or tranny and send it off to here:

    http://dieseltoys.com/tacoma-diesel-conversions

Only $35K using a rescue project to have a Diesel Tacoma.

the 2nd gen does tow better than the 1st, but no improvement in mileage. Since i am only really loaded down a few times a year, I deal with it.

so to make me buy a "better" truck...I need improvements in towing and fuel economy. otherwise it isn't worth it for me at least, the Colorado "might" be the ticket though...

BTW, I will admit, if the T6 version of the Ford Ranger came to North America I would be tempted by the small Ford Diesel if it was available. It's posting some great mpg in the Transit van, which is even worse aerodynamically than a truck, and is a bit more proven in North American than what Chevy is bringing to the table.

    no worries

The thought as crossed my mind. There is another company over Bend, that does them too...a bit closer to me as well.

Or just send them my 1st gen, I still prefer the size of it over the 2nd gen

I would trust the Ford waaay more than the GM.

This is waaaay over the budget, but a 4WD diesel transit would be bad ass...plus I could toss the bikes inside, and not have to trailer them. I really don't want to DD a van though...

    Too few to list.
$30k is probably around what one would pay to get a brand new Hilux in the country. The Hilux sells for about $19K in its most expensive configuration in other countries. Plus shipping, tax, etc, (about $10k) There was a thread about this in TTORA long time ago.

I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
Than we can have forum wars on how much offroad capability a set of Invincible stickers provide .... and some claiming Toyota had included invisible magic in the stickers...
Oh those one the best talks on European forums.

"New member here, should I order my Hilux with invincible stickers....opinions....?"

Yeah, but that Hilux won't have any North American safety features and, if you get it from Japan, won't be left hand drive. What are the rules on registering a truck like that in the USA? I know in Canada it's a no go. Putting a Diesel in a Tacoma gives you a Diesel Tacoma that will be easy to register.

Sorry to pick on you, but I thought this line was pretty funny. A payload more than half a ton is dismal for a half ton. Then going on to say that any reasonable half ton is at least 3/4 ton.

I get that half ton now actually seems to mean full size light duty, and has dick all to do with actual payload. I thought it was funny to see those terms being used in such a contradiction.

The ecoturd has got to be a contender for biggest pos ever. Pretty simple, do not buy a diesel anything that is not from USA, Japan, Germany, or Sweden.

it is pretty funny...because there was time...when a half ton was actually a half ton. Now we expect half tons to haul what the 3/4-1 tons of yore used to haul.

Heck, you can spec out a F150 with a 3000+ lbs pay load. Fricken crazy!

    http://www.ford.com/trucks/f150/specifications/payload/

...and here we are, complaining specs, while we have come a damn long way.

Some 2nd gen owners would say they can "tow" that. They have seen a 190 hp Dodge Ram tow it so why can't a Tacoma with 236 HP?
