My employer would tell me "bye" if I did that. Everyone is replaceable in his eyes.

I'm way out of my element here. I found a nice free template to work with and have modified it a bunch. The site is 80% done, but I think it still looks like something a 3rd grader would do.

That sounds like a recipe for being setup for failure. To most people in the business side, IT people know how to do everything. It's all very similar to them they don't realize the vast difference and scope of different part of IT now.

If you can heavily manage expectations and get the time require to learn web coding and develop a web page then sure but I really wouldn't touch that with a 12 ft pole and would expect no one to be happy with the result and it would only damage your image and political capital with the business.

LOL, this is a small town and a very non-corporate atmosphere. Boss is just cheap and doesn't want to pay an outside entity to do it. He actually likes what I've gotten done.

He's going to find out sooner or later that it would have been cheaper to pay a professional. :)

I really need to find a better job where I can actually do what I went to college for again. It sucks being the only IT person in your company.

LOL! That first video is funny and sadly much like some of the requests I've dealt with in the past.

The 2nd one reminds me of a time at my last job when someone came to our IT department and asked if any of us knew how to fix an elevator.

Man, that sounds so familiar... I spent 12 years doing ALL of IT. Company was 4 people when I started, now it's 48. The very definition of IT is a constant struggle to keep straight with just about everybody in the company... very, very few realize what in the hell IT means. It doesn't mean website design OR build (unless that's what you were hired for), it doesn't mean software design OR build (unless that's what you were hired for), it does mean IT. Period. If you want your hardware systems (not just the client machines, duh) and their associated programs to always work and never (as much as is possible) fail you, don't lump IT in with anything other than the TECH side of the IT definition. Otherwise, everybody loses.

I finally got an assistant 2 years ago, and I have no idea how I didn't implode in those first 12 years. Whatever doesn't kill you...

    I'm taking Sec+ next Wednesday.

    Any hints, tips, etc?

Any clue as to what the simulation problems will be?

    Thanks

My boss started out like that, took years of training for him to see the light, and he still doesn't most days. BUT, by stepping up to the plate, you only make yourself more valuable, not just to him but to everybody else in the world who may one day hire you. I once took on an intern, 15 years older than me, full certs in MS this and that and fully Cisco certified. Problem was that he specialized so much in ONE thing that nobody wanted to hire him, or at least nobody in his area. Way harder to find a job in your one degree field unless you don't mind relocating to who knows where. Having said all that, the onus is on you to make sure everybody in your company knows you're not Superman, at least not all of the time. Otherwise, you'll be expected to save the whales and fix the Greece debt crisis and end world hunger. And all that in addition to your "normal" everyday duties :goingcrazy:

    ^ This.

Most of the IT pros I know, me included, knew NOTHING about it when we started... it's solely a matter of refusing to give up AND knowing how to ask a question correctly in Google. If you have those two things, the world is your oyster, or whatever the saying is.

Sec+ really isn't too hard. Just pay attention, do your practice tests, and you'll be good to go.

Throw up a WordPress site, buy a good looking theme and in a day or two they'll think you are a genius. It doesn't have to be that hard.

Already stepped up to to the plate many times, which is probably why I'm doing the website in the first place. His exact words were, "I think we have the resources to do this in house", meaning "I'm sure that you can figure it out". He thinks a lot higher of my ability than I do, that's for sure.

And then the next day it gets hacked and you get fired. WordPress sites have no place in real business.

    Working on it
I tell them okay, then pay someone else to do it. It costs them less in the short term to have someone that gives a shit about web design do it than my time would cost them.

lol clearly you don't do much with web development - depending on who's numbers you believe WordPress powers 20%+ of all internet sites. Next thing you're going to say is he shouldn't use Linux to host his site.
