Hey guys, I got an SVT-40 2 weeks ago and whenever I shoot it it triggers a migraine (pisses me off, sweet shooting gun other than that)

But because of this, it's for sale. I've had it posted a few places for 1150 shipped, but I'll do 1050 for TW members. If someone wants it. Here is a picture. If anyone Is interested I have more detailed pictures and info

Gonna be spending a few weeks in Alaska next year. Need opinions on shotgun (maybe 12ga slug) vs. handgun (.44mag) vs rifle (repeating .30\220) for critter deterrent. Lots of pros/cons for each. Decisions decisions.

How about an SBR'd AR in .458 Socom? It'd actually be a good excuse to build one lol.

Depends on what you're doing up there. AK is a huge place and the answer will be different depending on whether you're fishing the Kenai or being flown out and dropped off alone to shoot a caribou or just visiting Denali.

Shotgun if you don't mind packing it. My buddy got charged by a bear this fall. He was packing a pump shotgun with sabot slugs. Heard the bear coming and only had enough time to turn and shoot from the hip! I myself just feel more comfortable with a shot gun but will pack a handgun when I have to go light. At least have something, you don't want to be caught without one when you need it!

    Where are you visiting?

Excellent point. I guess I would call this a scouting trip, so nothing extreme. This will be my first time driving up and camping along the way.

Still a lot of planning to do but ultimate destination will be Anchorage to visit some family with potential for continuing on to Homer. I hope to get out into some more semi-isolated places as well.

So I recently acquired about 417rds of 44Magnum, 100 38 special, and a handful of 357. My only problem is that I dont own any of those calibers lol. Whats the rough sale price on this? I dont really need it and dont want to post it for a ridiculous amount.

I've had two family friends attacked by brown bears in the past two years. Neither one had a chance to do a single thing before the bear was on them chomping away. No time to draw a gun, no time to pull bear spray, not even any time to try to drop and play dead.

That said, I'd go with whatever you feel the quickest with and thats gonna be different for everyone.

This is exactly what I think about most of the time. You don't always get a perfect scenario where a bear is giving you plenty of time to prepare your defense. That being the case, i feel a handgun in a chest rig would probably serve best while performing typical campsite/hiking activities. Of course, taking the bear loads out to the range for practice goes without saying. Maybe something like a .357mag would suit better than a larger hand cannon based solely on the reasoning that I would be more comfortable shooting it with higher accuracy.

Way back when I was a 10 year old kid living in Spenard, I once had the unfortunate pleasure of being chased up a tree by a momma moose. While it may not be directly applicable to your inquiry I think it safe to say "Don't underestimate those critters!" Bring something with you that's controllable yet has enough oomph to stop them before they stop you. My first thought would be short barreled coach gun were it not for the fact that I'd want more than two rounds... and that I shudder to imagine what shooting a 12 gauge slug out of a short barrel shotgun would be like.

Sounds like a Benelli M4 is in order. Semi-auto and reliable. Delivers 12 Gauge slugs as fast as you can pull the trigger. Expensive. I want one.
