Sutter is somewhat of a rental. If you believe what came out of TO in the Kessel deal Shanny wanted Sutter but only if they could get an extension together for him because he's a UFA next summer. The Sutter camp seemed to be interested in waiting for free agency and that took him out of the deal.

If Vancouver loses him next year to the market was this even close to worth it considering there chances in the West to go deep?

Yeah, that's why it's a hypothetical. Are you comfortable trading those assets for a player in the last year of his deal on a team that is likely trending down as it's core continues to age?

I like Sutter. Don't get me wrong. I'd just be worried that he'll only be here for a year.

 

Canucks are trying to get younger up front so Sutter and a pick does that , assuming they can sign Sutter long term . Clendening may have become expendible with the signings of Tanev and Corrado

 

If Sutter signs long term for a tolerable cap hit this deal is a win. Vancouver is a nice city and the organisation is well respected. You have a good chance he will stick around and maybe that was part of the deal that hasn't been announced yet.

One thing I got from the Quick piece is that he understands possession (advanced) stats but maybe we need to focus on a weighted possession number like his Getzlaf/Perry example.
