Hi everyone. Just got my Tacoma a couple months ago and have been getting rigged for my elk hunt this September. A few more projects in the queue, but generally ready to roll so will be watching the thread. Now, if i can just decide where to squeeze a cb into this thing...IMG_20150626_135951962.jpg

Have you thought about Ham radio ? VHF carries a lot further than CB.

Sweet rig, Doug! I like that color, and the TRD wheels look good.

As promised, some pics from Goose Lake...

Yes, thanks, but I just wanted something for communicating during trail rides with others. I'm not all that concerned for long range communication. Actually just picked up a Cobra 29LX, so my path is set, at least for now.

I wouldn't say we've given up on CB for most runs I'm on but, usually a couple of us bring Motorola Talkabouts and hand them out at the meet up point. Most of the time, it is hard to find a clear channel on the CBs.

Oh! I misunderstood your requirement. The wife and I have been exploring New Mexico mostly by ourselves since 2002. I carry a handheld CB for emergency communication. If you are on a high place close to I 25 or I 40 you might get help. The state police monitor channel 9. Recently got my ham license and also have a hand held VHF with mag mount antenna for emergencies. There are repeaters all over the state and the frequencies are available on line.
More challenging this year with the rains. Mud holes on almost every road. I stay mostly stock on my vehicles so I have to be careful.
Forest road 76 from Tres Ritos should be interesting this year.

Understand. I am solo most of the time, so my rig is a bit "enhanced", with a 3" level, upsized tires, winch bumper with winch, lots of recovery gear including a ground anchor, and I'm working to add undercarriage cameras to help me in those tough spots when I don't have a spotter. I hunt and photograph the back country and like to be home at night... Though I always am prepared in case nature has other plans.

Thanks Ron. I need to make some measurements and weigh options. I have been toying with mounting it between the center ceiling consle and the mirror, but that presents problems of its own. The Cobra 29 is a bit bigger than the Uniden, so now that I have it in hand I will figure it out. I have an auxillary fuse/relay module to install in the mean time.

So I am looking into the HAM radios. I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction for certification around the Albuquerque area, or is it just a test online that you have to study and pass? My 4Runner is pretty stock, but I would like to come along on some of the easier trail rides that you all put together on here. Thanks to anyone who as any info on this.

You can buy the Technician class book on line. It is self study at your own pace. I can help you find where and when the test is located. It is multiple choice on a computer. Don't need any technical background. glad to help get you started.
My vehicle is stock except for the tires. Easy runs work for me.

Thanks Roamer appreciate the help! I'm going to see about getting the Technician book sometime soon. Good to know it's at your own pace. I have been pretty busy with work as of late, so hopefully I get some free time to study and pass the exam. Again appreciate the help!

Not much adventure talk going on in this thread.

Anybody interested in some pretty serious 4 wheeling in the Glade Canyon/choke Cherry area? I'd recommend rear locker and HC bumpers, 33's etc.
I know enough of the area that everyone could have some fun. The rocks there grip just like Moab and there is virtually no one there ever. The trails have obstacle after obstacle with many places requiring a spot. Your thirst for testing your skill, vehicle and nerves can will be quenched. I think it's a quick 2.5 hours from Albuquerque.
There's many videos on you tube and a website 4x4tricks.com that has a map of be trails with descriptions. LMk

    Side note-
Dirt Riot 2015 is in Cortez tomorrow if anyone might be traveling through.
