Does that apply to all packages or just the high end (TRDs and Limited)?

    Thanks

All. The push button start is part of the automatic transmission option.
Don't know why, other vehicles with manual transmissions have push button starts.

Why? Because they can get away with it, simple as that. Just like they (think) can get away with no height adjustable driver seat (or power seats for that matter).

There is no alternative for a mid-size 4x4 truck with a manual. So I'll buy it, regardless (and while I love keyless start idea, I dislike the typical implementation via button).

    Not enough...
Push button start has been available for years and its as reliable as anything else. I had it on 3 BMWs and it has never failed me. That said, I am kinda happy to have the simple key start again. My last BMW X3 had comfort access, meaning you did not have to put in the key. Just get in and push the button.... Well, it was just as easy to jump out of the car and walk away with engine running, because it was so quiet that I could not hear it running when I stopped. So couple of times I took my dog to the beach just to come back an hour later to a running car.... It did lock automatically when I walked away though, so that was a good thing ;)

Did that vehicle have a setting where it will shut off if running for a certain amount of time?

I've been using keyless entry for a week now on a rental Ford Exploder - after the first day or so I'll say I mostly like it. I wish I could find a way for it to turn the motor off if I walk away .. also the power seats automatically go back when you turn the motor off. I guess its handy but it is still making me freak out a little - I keep thinking the damn thing is rolling.

Removed factory bed cover and installed UnderCover Elite. Added LOCKERDOWN console safe.
Before I retired last year we sold them on several model Toyotas over many years. I cannot remember one problem in the shop ever.
BUT,,,,, One big problem was on several Demos I have gotten out and walked away with the damn thing running. Sure was nice an cool when I returned as the a/c was always on in Texas......

I have push button start in my new truck and while it took a little while to get used to, now I wonder how I lived without it. It's so nice to be able to leave my keys in my gym or work bag and never have to dig around for them. You guys will love it in the new Tacoma.

    Too few to list.
It's nice to be able to get in your vehicle without pulling out the key or key fob to unlock. Toyota uses this technology in their Prius and 4runner Limited that I've seen. You just walk towards the door and it unlocks, you get in and push start and ready to go. All without having to get the key/fob out of your pocket.

^^^^ THIS!!!! This feature needs to have some sort of shut off feature. A Chevy Cruze or something like that I rented recently had the feature that shuts the motor off at stoplights like cars in Europe, I think it was only once it was warmed up. That'd make a lot of sense on these cars.

Push button start > Keys. I rent cars constantly for work and I've never had one with the push button start messed up/broken. If it's still working on a Chevy vehicle that's being used as a rental, then you won't have an issue with a Toyota.

my Yaris doesn't have push button start,
but it is wired for one (all euro Yaris have it).

just tap the key to start and instantly let go, that thing will
know what to do and start the motor, and if is skips or doesn't catch it keeps trying, as though you
    were holding the key.

when I got trucky I had to get out of this habit since a quick key tap doesn't start it, it just turns it half over
