How come I keep reading that the 16 will be lighter than the previous gen. In the video interview with the engineer I thought he said that the 16 would be lighter than the 15, but because on the extra stuff they are putting in it, it will actually be heavier.

We will hear about MPGs in the next couple of weeks.

    It's old Jedi mind trick.
2015 is heavier than 2007 by about 300 lb. but 2016 is going to be lighter than 2015 by 200lb. 200 lb was saved by making frame thinner from "high strength steel" not like previously, which was made from high strength steel but thicker.
It should rust on MA trucks in 5 years instead usual 9 year period, so it will get lighter with time and improve MPG but no worry that's two years after warranty expires so That's still good.

Guess BlueT, us in Arizona will not see the improved mpg as the frames rusts. My 2006 has no rust issues. A friends 09 is still clean.
One benefit if living in the SW. Little rust issues , even when going up to the high country during the winter to play in the snow.

It's not going off mpg, you fill the tank once then it's good for the life of the truck only 1 fill up, they really got their shit together

lol. I'm sticking to my MPG estimates. Wait & see. That new Tacoma looks like it's stripped bare bone for weight, from the engine to the sheet metal composites…it's a like a lightweight toy. This is the only thing that makes me want to buy one.

After all, their MPG numbers have to be high to compensate for such an ugly vehicle.

Just curious why the 300lb increase from 2007 to 2015? Safety equipment?

It has gotten heavier, but not by quite that much. Looks like it has gradually picked up weight over the years. The curb weight includes the weight of all optional equipment. Some of the weight on the 2015 can be attributed to the 18" rims on the limited, which wasn't available in 2011. I don't know where else it would be hiding 100 lbs of extra equipment.

its unclear to me what defines optional equipment. I don't know if stuff like the factory running boards, skid plates, floor mats, roof racks and all that junk count. If those accessories do count as optional equipment, they may not have been an option in the past or they may have had different weights.

    The 2005 DCLB v6 4x4 AT 4100 lbs. source
    The 2008 DCLB v6 4x4 AT 4145 lbs. source
    The 2011 DCLB v6 4x4 AT 4190 lbs. source
    The 2015 DCLB v6 4x4 AT 4285 lbs. source

I'm willing to be you are not far off in your estimates. I think the hwy EPA numbers will be 24 or 25.

Lets put it this way, I'll buy the truck regardless but they better be those numbers. Full sized trucks are starting to do better than mid-sized trucks even with the significant additional weight. Mid-sized truck engineers need to get their crap together.
Also Merica needs to stop with all the required safety specs. It's adding weight and substantial cost. I wish we were more like Europe and didn't have all these required safety features. I don't exactly feel safe in my truck knowing I have an airbag that could snap my neck coming at me from all angles o_O. I've spent some hours in the ED though, so I fear many things.
Just words of advice, never walk around with a fork in your mouth. Ever.
